Duke 1450

Anyone normal kid get in? We love it so much but no hooks. Excellent ECs but not national. 4.8 Weighted GPA highest rigor and from what we can see excellent recs (one teacher sent, I know awful but she did). Male.

DD had similar stats and 1500. Very ambitious application. She was deferred, ultimately rejected. She was devasted. Toured her other acceptances, UVA, univ of Michigan, Boston college, Maryland, Penn state, Clemson. Narrowed it down to BC, Clemson and Penn state. Went to admitted student days and chose Penn state. It was her last choice. She loves it and thinks she is having a better experience than she would have at Duke. FWIW, she stopped at Duke campus on the way back from Clemson tour and felt the energy on campus was low compared to Penn state and even Clemson. It wasn’t basketball season but it was a gorgeous day and hardly anyone hanging out enjoying the weather. I didn’t think Duke was a grinder school but the other 2 she visited had a lot of activity. Much larger campuses which she decided she liked. All this to say, it isn’t the end of the world if he doesn’t get in!

Unless you’re NC residents, not happening for unhooked with that score. Better strategy is ED Chicago test optional.

What does NC residency have to do with it?

They have something called the Carolina commitment. Google it. Much higher, admit rate.

Lots of schools below Duke but certainly above Wake and BC. State Flagships are better value than those 2.

Some people aren’t looking for value. They’re looking for small class size and a different kind of intimate college environment.

I don’t think a state school and Duke are comparable when it comes to those two factors.

This is interesting anecdotal information. Thanks for sharing. What was her major? Did she apply from a public high school or private high school?

It’s pretty unlikely

Obviously Duke is a top 6 school and when factoring in campus, alumni connections, weather, and sports probably the best. Wake and BC charge Duke like prices for far lesser products. UNC and UMass will get you to same outcomes as Wake and BC for half the cost.
