Skyview Information for Families of Attending Kids

Anonymous
I really dislike the hub system, it makes no sense to have a kid take the bus to a wrong school and then what - be late for skyview? I would think they would bus from elementary schools like TJ.

At the session for rising 10th graders all they said was that there would be some sort of "hub system" where students can take a bus to a nearby school and a second bus from there to Skyview.

Thank you, someone earlier LIED and said it was to their base high school.

It's a NEARBY SCHOOL not the base high school.

So did PP misunderstand or did you misunderstand? Kind of crude for you to call someone a liar when the fault lies entirely with Reid and her staff for not providing clear information on transportation and so many other Skyview-related topics.

I've asked about transportation several times and did not receive either of these answers. The real answer is they have no plan yet.

I'm the one who said the school was designed originally for around 1500 kids. I know FCPS says it will be 2000 but for those are crowing about not having 1000 yet, I'm simply saying the kids that will go there do not care, and frankly it might be nice to have a smaller class.

My older kids went to Chantilly - having sat through a 800 person graduation multiple times, I'm not too worried about my 9th grader having a smaller class. This is an opt in class, and has nothing to do with FCPS future plans, whatever they are.

Here is what I know - they ARE developing curriculum for the pathways, the staff IS excited to be there and they WILL have the AP classes our family cares about, so again, if your child has not opted in, please find another thread to complain on. For those of you who have "significant" concerns about a HS with 1500 kids if that turns out to be what it is (the same parents complain about funding to expand it) you can go to private school if you do not like the FCPS school your kid is zoned to.

The things people complain about is unreal.

not all teachers are excited about skyview. teachers at westfield are being told they have no choice but to move to skyview and they don’t want to. they are also cutting classes at westfield next year as they move teachers out

Is that why Westfield is holding a “lottery” for rising seniors to take DE Government next year? Everyone not chosen has to take AP or Honors or regular.

No idea. I do know that Seniors are not moving to Skyview and should not be impacted by Skyview at all. The only grades losing kids are 9th and 10th so Senior level classes are not impacted by Skyview.

No real transportation plan, ripple effects at other schools as the limited set of teachers qualified to teach DE and AP courses transfer to Skyview.

I get logistics is not a strong suit at FCPS but more indication that the projection of establishing boundaries for Skyview, which FCPS already has enough data to decide will be further delayed.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see it remain an opt-in school to avoid more boundary battles with parents.

The posts about Westfield are false. As someone recently hired by Skyview, less than 10% of the staff are from Westfield, with many coming from Chantilly, Centreville, and Herndon. Interviews were held the week of Feb. 17th, long before any other schools knew their staffing numbers.

I suspect some Westfield schools were late in understanding that they might be moved to Skyview and are just getting worked up. Blaming Skyview for cuts in a 12th grade class is ridiculous.

I would think that most are very aware. But, if you have an older child in a high school, I'm not sure you would opt in.

Big mistake not setting boundaries last Fall.

Just stop. They are starting the boundary process.

They said it would be similar to the TJ hub system, which picks up at HSs. They did not say ESs, which would make sense. The comment was vague, leaving it open to interpretation. Chill out a bit.

TJ picks up kids at our local ES, so I agree, I think they meant a nearby school - probably will vary based on the population of kids who opted in. I would love to see a list of department chairs or teachers, is that available?

Boundary proposals will be out in April.
