Skyview Information for Families of Attending Kids

Maybe, Cub Run pool is very close to WFHS and CHS though.

I attended the inaugural PTSA meeting last night. Very exciting! Thank you to those who volunteered to take on leadership. There is such great energy - it feels as though Skyview is on to a great start. Looking forward to the "Come in Unity" event on Wednesday. I really hope the kids can start to get to know each other. I suspect everyone feels like "I won't know anyone."

We'll be there too. Our 9th grader has been meeting friends from middle school who went on to different high schools.

What is the bussing situation for those outside the Skyview boundary (but opted in from one of the five originally targeted HS’s)?

Undetermined, there was a mention of bussing hubs for out of boundary students.

My DC is not in the zone schools, and the messaging was unclear that everyone is eligible to apply. The principal came to the middle school and gave a presentation; I learned about the school through my child.

After visiting, I get the impression they are recruiting the waitlist children from TJ. I can’t imagine that not becoming a magnet school. I think the county is going to invest all of their energy to make sure that this is a success. I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes more covenant than TJ in the future.

Alternatively, it can be a disaster like most things at FCPS and hopefully the first few classes don’t feel a negative impact when applying for college.

*coveted

Apologize for all the errors in my post. I am typing quickly on my phone

The boundary meeting last night at Skyview HS (and online) was super interesting, the boundary company seemed to really struggle with this process. Multiple neighborhoods are fired up and want answers to many questions about how maps were developed and why maps were developed into the 3 "potential" scenarios.

Not unless it passes TJ in the national rankings and I doubt that happens anytime in the near future. It is not going to have the advanced labs or options that TJ has. They will foster a connection in the areas where they can, like the AI, but it will not otuch what TJ has for resources or specialized course options. It could be a nice fall back for kids who are not admitted to TJ in the Western part of the County but this about it. Pupil placed students will have to provide their own transportation as well.

The consultants admitted that they did not bother to do the research to figure out neighborhoods and proceeded to develop scenarios that involved breaking up ES's. It was a mess and gives me zero confidence that the consulting firm has a clue as to what they are doing. But that discussion belongs in the Western High School Boundaries thread.

They are now accepting anyone who wants to opt in. All you have to do is complete the IT-110 form and give it to your school and you will be transferred. There is space - all are welcome to opt in throughout Fairfax county. (I'm grateful because my kid was no where close to TJ viable, but really wants to be a pilot. He is so excited about skyview!)

They've just announced a formal partnership with TJ. On Saturday at noon, there will be an open house with the TJ and Skyview Principles to discuss it. Here is the formal language:

Skyview students will have the unique opportunity to engage in shared Aerospace Science programming, science fairs, and peer mentoring with Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST). This alliance ensures students have unparalleled access to specialized academic experiences and resources.

If your family is interested in being part of the inaugural Skyview community, we invite you to learn more by attending an open house on Saturday, May 2, at noon. TJHSST Principal Mike Mukai will join me in sharing information about our collaboration and answering your questions. Please register to attend.

In the interim, I encourage you to visit the Skyview High School website. If you would like to learn about Skyview’s enrollment process, please view our Student Registration page or contact us at 571-720-0691.

Sincerely,

Dave Jagels
