We just got back from the first meeting. The 9th grade session was packed, standing room only in the auditorium. The kids went to the gym to start putting down ideas for colors, mascots, and clubs. Then they had some sort of scavenger hunt.
The parents were introduced to the admin team, they were all energetic and decked out in basic Skyview High Hoodies, white with black text. Everyone used the words “comprehensive high school” as frequently as possible. They discussed the arts, band, orchestra, guitar, choir, theatre, tech theatre and the like. They mentioned that they will start smaller because the pool of kids is smaller and then grow as the number of kids grow. They discussed the pathways and the tie ins to existing class, like computer programing and STEM design. They discussed how kids not interested in the pathways will have all the other normal course options. They discussed the arts that they will offer, apparently the school has 8 kilns so there will be ceramics and all the other regular arts classes. They discussed sports. They are aiming for full VHSL sports by year 2 with the one exception being varsity football. There are safety concerns due to the age of the kids and the size of the student body population, it is under discussion. There will be intramural sports next year for kids who want to play something but not go to their base school to play. They are planning on monthly meetings with parents and kids to build the community and answer questions. The last day to opt in is 1 March, which is why numbers have not been released. One staff member said around 700 have opted in so far but no break down on numbers. |

Thanks for the information. Very helpful.
March 1 deadline is interesting. Can kids outside five HS boundaries opt-in? |
The email we received when it was confirmed my kid was attending said that they would accept kids from outside the 5 pyramids but I have not seen anything on how to do that. Maybe they are waiting until after 1 March? They did not discuss that and staff really didn’t want to give out numbers. The one person I spoke to said that was because kids have opted out while others are opting in and things have been in flux. They also said that they have started meeting with the kids who opted in for academic counseling. |
How would anyone opt out? Do you mean kids opting in who changed their minds and were allowed to do so? |
Yes, they said that in the email. Until 1 March. |
|
They also said they will be doing intramural sports the first year, including things with the pool which may also involve pool based gym classes and lifeguard certifications.
Where they don’t get enough enrollment for a class they will form after school clubs, I think theatre tech was an example. |
| They will need to share what the per pupil spending is at Skyview in 2026-27 compared to any other high school. Should be interesting. |
Do they share that for all schools? |
Yes. The VDOE publishes that information. |
Care to share that link? |
It’s not a single link. You can do a Google search for “VDOE school quality profile” for specific schools. Per pupil spending is under the “Finance” heading. |
| How exciting for the kids to be involved in selecting colors, mascots, etc! I hope they don't pick stupid ones though - I know a lot of middle school boys and they are not great with this stuff. |
|
My kid suggested white, black, and grey because the sky can be cloudy.
This is going to go well. |
