This is false. First, the majority of insurers don’t cover wegovy. Second, prices are dropping rapidly thanks to insane competition.

They aren’t really dropping rapidly. They are sold for massively cheaper prices abroad (I would say 1500% cheaper…but since our dipshit president is so stupid…often 75%+ cheaper) and just like statins, when they come off patent you will be able to get them for just like $10/month or less.

Cash prices are down to $300/mo for starting doses and $499/mo for maintenance doses. The negotiated rates insurers pay are much lower than the cash prices. By contrast, the popular biologic I take is $7,300/mo cash price.

Republicans have no health plan coming

Project 2025 removes preexisting condidions, maternity care and many other items that we currently get.

And you can get them in many European and Asian countries for under $50/month…and the manufacturers are still making a ton of money at that price. Don’t say we need the US market to create these drugs because a Danish company discovered them and was happy to just sell it in Europe and only for diabetes patients in the US.

Why do we accept this as Americans??

starbucks, only have to work 20 hours a week to get medical, and they have a 401K they match on. That is not many hours. I used to work 20 hours all during college. Giving starbucks by my house is open 5am to 9pm most days. Pretty easy to do 20 hours even with a full time job.

In October, Starbucks announced it was closing approximately 200 stores in the US and cutting 9,000 jobs, not all corporate.

The disrespect for teachers is astounding. You think anybody can do a good job teaching your children PP?

The question isn't whether GLP-1s should cost less. The question is whether the reason OP is paying 1/3 of their salary on healthcare premiums is because GLP-1s are driving up costs. They aren't. At least not in a remotely meaningful way.

Wow! That is so harsh.

This makes me glad to be married to someone from another country. We have enough money to retire early there if we needed to and there health care is much much cheaper. If I lose my 300k tech job and can’t find a replacement I’ll probably leave the country and FIRE

Anonymous wrote:I’m sorry OP. The current system sucks. I think tying health insurance to employment is barbaric. People regularly lose their jobs and are then supposed to shell out even more money for Cobra (without a paycheck) or just go uninsured. Also, for profit health insurance companies are just incompatible with patient care. How can a company maximize shareholder value and also cover high quality care for insureds.

So now we are at the mercy of corporate insurance profits and companies wanting to contribute less toward premiums. And the average American doesn’t exactly have a ton of good, affordable options.

That said you made it sound like it’s getting paid out of take home pay. Do you not have the option of paying with pre-tax dollars?

In many states — including Maryland — coverage through the ACA has also been available. If you lose your job, there’s a decent chance that your income — which might be zero — will allow you to qualify for low cost health insurance coverage or Medicaid. I don’t know if that will continue to be true going forward.

Yes they are. I started them a year ago paying out of pocket. It was originally $1100/month, then dropped to about $500 and now to $350. That may not be cheap, but it's a pretty rapid price drop.

Yeah but if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor. Insurance was $35/check before that

OP has kids. When is she supposed to see and care for them? When are she and kids supposed to go to the doctor and dentists she got this extra job for. Soon they will let families share a job for insurance! Anything but change the system we pay for.

Cash price isn't the insurance paid price...

And how much was your employer picking up if you were paying $70 month? 70- 80-90%? That’s the whole point.

Understood, but I'm sure the insurance companies get a better deal than I do. And I imagine the costs are on a downward trend, too.

Further, the more people lose fat, the less insurance is going to pay for weight-based health issues. So I sincerely doubt that wegovy and the like are a net loss for insurance companies.
