BOE member pushes Option H for personal gain?

There is no plan to rebuild Wootton. Option H, essentially let Wootton to be relocated.

Among other benefits, it helps to secure Churchill’s boundary, which is in the district that the BOE member is bidding for a county council seat.

So, Gaithersburg residents lost a new school, and she can win votes in her county council campaign? This is f-ed up!

I thought that both the Wootton students and the families local to Crown would go to Crown under option H, is that incorrect? Who is getting hurt by this?

Please think about kids in Gaithersburg!

Don't Wootton kids live in Gaithersburg and isn't Crown in Gaithersburg? Are there other Gaithersburg kids that this hurts and if so who? Genuinely asking, I live in Silver Spring and am not very familiar with that part of the county.

In option abcd, close to 2000 Gaithersburg students will move to Crown. Now with Wootton taking Crown, it only has the capacity to take 500 or so from Gaithersburg, and Gaithersburg High will still be 100% capacity. The city is still growing fast. It is UNFAIR to Gaithersburg!

Abcd is based on the old utilization numbers. The new numbers were released after those options came out (which made no sense, why couldn’t they have just waited?) and not only were the overcrowding issues no longer there, they could barely fill Crown.

They weren’t just taking 2000 Gaithersburg students and moving them to crown by the way. They were redistricting in a way that made no sense.

With this option H, Gaithersburg is actually within capacity. I heard it also leaves the ability to add another 500 seats at crown in the future should there be enough growth to support that.

You can go and check the numbers and compare abcd to h. Gaithersburg high schools are still very crowded. Hundreds of homes are being built there. Where are the kids going?

You say crowded but if you look at the metrics they are still under 100%.

The new builds- which developments specifically? The Grove is slated to go to Wootton, at least until they fix the elementary schools and do a study for them. The other builds with high end condos generally don’t have a ton of school aged children.

Look I completely understand why people in Crown are upset. They have been expecting a new neighborhood school. Unfortunately it’s part of the public school system and as it’s known to do fairly regularly mcps will change plans out of nowhere. But the neighborhood is losing a lot of goodwill with the nonsense they have been posting on social media. They would rather make sensational statements versus fact based statements. They are losing their credibility and making people mad.

What is fact based statement ? The fact is that >1000 Gaithersburg students who would be able to go to Crown and have been expecting this for years now lose their opportunity. Gaithersburg High will be 100% capacity and the other Gaithersburg high schools are close to 100%. In the first round, these schools would be 80-90% capacity, which is much reasonable for students and staff. Wootton’s condition was evaluated against the same standard as all other schools, what facts do you have saying it is worse and need to be rebuilt completely?

Yeah Churchill cluster is pushing all these from behind. Ironically Wootton is taking all the blames, though I do not have much sympathy for them

If you move Wootton to Crown permanently, it would mean less than 500 kids are able to walk to school. The current Wootton building serves a lot more walkers. Why would we want to add more buses around the county? This makes bo sense.

Because it saves about $300M

The overcrowding of Gaithersburg HS is going to come from all the new builds around Montgomery Village, parts of Frederick Ave and in and around Gaithersburg proper.

There's a note on the data table that GHS has a shell space which could be built out in the future. Maybe that's what they're planning if the enrollment increases.

Mcps doesn’t care about saving money. The issue is they cannot afford to replace or repair the schools due to boe and central office mismanagement. Why do we need a $30 million lease for a warehouse to hold school supplies. Just order the supplies and driectly deliver them to the school.

Please enlighten us which part was false. Is it the part that this BOE member is running for district 1 county council? Or the part she is pushing for option H? Or the part her district 1 schools would be unaffected under H?

Everyone can easily check the above. Right?

Also easily verifiable:
1. At the engagement meeting, it was specifically emphasized that board member wanted to include H.
2. Google or use AI to search the proposed budget or the estimated cost to renovate Wootton. Then you’ll see why saving “100s of millions” would mean to cancel the renovation and make the move permanent.

Please stop spread misinformation about unfounded numbers, such as “$100s of millions of dollars”. Please fact-check. Or, perhaps you know something we don’t, because saving “$100s of millions of dollars” would mean to completely cancel any renovation to the current Wootton HS.

I suppose “ You must be from the neighborhood that is creating all of these false accusations who is mad you may not get what you feel you “deserve”.” should be applied to you.

Wow your tone sounds awfully familiar. Kinda like the exact person I am talking about who is spreading these lies all over social media. Yes. I am speaking in facts. Read the documents from the presentations. It’s all available online. Yes. It would save $100s of millions in option H because they will NOT be renovating Wootton. Wootton would move permanently to crown and add in some of the crown neighborhood schools to the student population.

She may be running for a position but this is the entire board, the council and the superintendent pushing for this.

Are you dense? Option H IS a permanent move and the Wootton renovation would indeed be cancelled (not that it’s on the schedule anyway). E be F are holding school options. G is hybrid.

My point is her running has nothing to do with the board pushing option H. You are linking unrelated things to stir up drama and create a false narrative. The whole board came up with option H on their own. Not just her. It blindsided everyone who was told the options were going to be holding or hybrid. Not a full on permanent Wootton move. It makes sense economically and solves several issues at once.

It’s unclear whether the majority of the Wootton community actually wants to relocate, even though they all want the building to be renovated. It feels like an impossible choice: either give up the school’s legacy and history, or remain in a broken unsafe facility.

I don't get this. Why do they have to give up their legacy and history? It's moving, not shutting down. It will be Wootton in a new location.

Are you talking about Wootton? Majority of them do not want to move to Crown at all and they are complaining about option H.

I am and you are actually wrong. It’s not ideal but I think Wootton parents recognize this as the only option to get their kids out of a horrible building in the next decade. Almost every single Wootton parent I have talked to understands and supports this option.

I hear the opposite. None of the ones I know want to move to a much further school in a more crowded area. It would be nice to renovate Wootton, but be objective, Wootton is not much worse than the other schools, mold and all kinds of leaking problems happen everywhere.

I know Fallsmead, cold spring and Lakewood don’t love it. They are scared they’d one day be rezoned out of Wootton and also don’t want a longer commute. Have you been in Wootton lately? If it wasn’t a school it would be condemned. I am not exaggerating. These neighborhoods would prefer a renovated Wootton, yes. But the ones I talk to understand it’s more important for their kids to be safe in the end.

Of course i have been to Wootton, frequently. I have also been to Quince Orchard, Walkin Mills and RM recently for all kinds of activities. Admittedly Wootton is not comparable to RM, but come on, can you really tell the difference from QO or WM?

100% there is a difference.

Yes, Main St at RM is great. We've been to other HS, too.

+1 From a budgetary standpoint, it makes no sense to have Wootton and Crown given the declining enrollment and declining budget. Lots of people have been laid off; prices are going up. Is now the time to be fixing up a HS when the county is seeing declining enrollments?

This is like if you had two cars, one needs repairing, but the kids are about to move out of the house and you will be retiring soon so you will be on a fixed income. It would not be worth fixing up the one car when you can live off of one.

This is Montgomery County Public School, not just Gaithersburg or Rockville. MCPS needs to think about long term planning for the entire county.

And no, I'm not an MCPS schill. I think the regional model is ill conceived and will be a disaster like 2.0 was.
