She should be in a psych ward.

Why?

DCUM is primed to believe any girl who uses violence to defend herself is mentally ill.

She did not protect herself. She got hit by a ball, which was wrong but she chased the boy into off campus/wooded area, grabbed a weapon and hit or threw it at him causing life long injuries, at least two surgeries and more.

A boy that had been bullying her for weeks according to several accounts.

There is a difference between standing up for yourself and causing serious harm to someone else.

You’re all speaking from the perspective of an adult. That’s not how some kids think, especially if they have nothing to lose. If they’re in a rage sometimes they act without thinking. There are news stories of adults killing each other over trivial things like a parking spot. IF she has been hit with a ball or believed she was targeted then it is not a surprise she chose to attack him. The severity of the reaction indicated that there is some kind of history. Usually what I would expect to see is if Kid A throws a ball that hit Kid B, Kid B would throw a ball hitting Kid A. If Kid A slap Kid B, Kid B would slap back. But for her to pick up a weapon to attack him rather than just picking up the ball and throwing it right back makes me think that there had been prior interactions.

As far as supervision, PE classes tend to be very large even with multiple teachers. Question is whether anything has been reported to the teachers previously prior to the event. Or if they even knew that the issues were ongoing. Bullying is not taken seriously at all by any schools that I’ve worked for. No one cares because there are no consequences. Until it ends up in tragedy because no one took it seriously.

People have breaking points. Getting hit in the face with a football after months of constant insults. Was she still in the wrong? Yes, but stop with your holier than thou bs.

I think it's easier for people to type self righteously from their behind their keyboards while forgetting that these are middle school students-they are impulsive. She retaliated the first way she could think of in the moment. I HIGHLY doubt she thought in those seconds that she made this decision that she thought she'd cause him serious brain injury. I'm not absolving her from what she did, but Jesus Christ, this thread is ridiculous.

By MS, if you haven't taught your child hitting someone on the head can cause serious injury, maybe you should be held accountable as well given this child now has a serious brain injury and will never be the same again. What if your child was the one with the brain injury?

JFC, the victim-blaming here is just awful. The assailant threw a spike into this kid's skull. Nothing he might have done (and we don't know that he did anything) justifies that.

She is a kid she was sick and tired of the boy bullying her. Should she have thrown something at him no of course not. However this did not happen in a vacuum.

There is a reason the mother has not filed a lawsuit yet. And that she has not been arrested for assault.

This mother has been in the news before against 2, 3 and 4 years ago MCPS... And well ....

Do not get me wrong no child should ever go through this but it is not exactly being reported as Ms. Diaz is saying.

Reserve judgement after all the facts come out.

What is your motive in smearing Ms. Diaz and attempting to damage her credibility?

Please share with us the facts? How do you justify a child causing another child that kind of injury? Why is MCPS being quiet about what happened?

To do it hard enough for metal fragments to embed in his brain - that’s some serious force she used there. She should be moved to a school where this level of aggression can be addressed.

I can't help but notice that Ms. Diaz is willing to speak on the record, while all of these folks throwing mud at Lenny are hiding behind an anonymous website. Tell us who you are, and your relationship to this situation, and we can weigh your credibility about this bullying claim.

There are real people in MoCo who know both of these kids and their families. They aren’t the folks DCUM usually cares about so —as usual— this incident has just become a way for privileged people to use underprivileged people’s problems and trauma to further their own ends. I doubt 1 in 10 people here really care about the boy. If they did, they’d be protesting in front of the BOE.
