Surprised by the India education-to-job pipeline in my applicant pool

Yes, the H-1B program dramatically depressed tech salaries and has been a cheap labor program for the tech companies for 20 years.

This is "dog bites man" stuff. Not news.

It's frustrating though because if you try to talk about it, you get accused by the right of being anti-industrt/free market, and in the left as being racist/anti-immigtant.

Meanwhile Trump is deporting tons of immigrants whose work is essential to entire industries in the US and will have a serious economic impact, and doing it for purely racist reasons, but because those immigrants are exploiting an H1B loophole that benefits the tech it banking industries, no one cares.

If I were a Dem running for president in 2028, this is something I'd start talking about, as there are many college educated Americans struggling to find work or dealing with depressed pay despite high inflation, because entire industries are using H1B visas differently than they were intended in order to access cheaper immigrants labor.

There is also an entire industry dedicated to helping companies navigate the letter if H1B laws while violating the spirit, basically visa farms who knows how to check off the H1B requirements in the mist dishonest way possible.

H1B visas are meant to be rare and temporary solutions to help companies fill roles that require high levels of education in areas the US fails to turn out enough graduates in. It's for hiring specialized surgeons, finance quants, etc. But it's being used to hire cheap computer programmers and economists, areas of expertise that the US has plenty of homegrown graduates in.

But they are dumb and not at all competitive with global talent. Hiring dumb people means that US industries will fall behind. Look at China - so advanced in AI, EV, Chip technology, Robotics, Drone technology, Defence, Space Tech. You cannot rely on ill-educated, lazy American grads.

Those American kids who can study STEM subjects and excel at it, they are prized in the job market. Don't be fooled. Only people who have not kept up with tech skills are the ones that are jobless. (And of course the Federal workers who were doged. )

H1B's are going to take all tech jobs.

And AI.

The H1B program should be seriously revamped because US graduates can't find tech work at all and they should get first priority (no matter how they vote)

They'll get first priority when they have the right skills and work ethic. The last straight out of college grad I had did not even know how to use Microsoft Office! He couldn't write a standard SOP for a simple task, even though I gave him plenty of examples, a straightforward work plan, and set up twice a week check ins to guide him through it. TWICE!! By the second time, I would have expected to see a little more initiative, but I had to work with just as closely on the second and third ones as I did the first one. The foreign-born grads get it right away.

Why are they like this? Could it be because of vaccines, microplastics and their moms did not hold them when they were infants?

Agree, US graduates should get first priority. We need to stop the India education-to-US job pipeline, aka gravy train.

Why should we look favorably at India who ignores Western sanctions and continues to buy Russian oil. Recently, Modi the rat, was pictured holding hands with Xi and Putin. Modi getting cozy with the despots all the while the western countries allow easier immigration pathways for Indians.

Lovely picture of Trump's biggest failure.

Trump the convicted rapist has messed this one up. How does it feel to be bumfuxed, MAGA?

Domestic students can party for 4 years in a business school and land 90k jobs as BA/accountant/operations.
CS grad needs to take system design, math or physics and the salary doesn’t justify such.

Yes. Domestic grads don't want CS jobs. They want to be in Sales and Marketing. No one wants to do the grunt work of a STEM major.

I lived in South Asia for a few years for work. Ever since, I have been unable to trust anyone with a university degree completed in India: the corruption and dishonesty, complete with the prevalence of the "agents" who proudly and publicly advertise on billboards and social media and signs on their actual office/center doors about the "services" they offer in obtaining fake degrees, fake paperwork, and even fake school transcripts/completion of US university application procedures ruined it for me. It is sooooo easy to buy a fake degree in India, or even to get a degree in India you haven't really earned because it is so easy to bribe or otherwise get the grades/certificate you need.

Sure, many people actually have real degrees they earned. But many, many people in India have fake degrees and use these "agents" to fake what htey need to get to the US.

I have no idea why this isn't more widely talked about, but anyone who has lived in India knows it is true.

Historic picture. Utter failure of United States due to ill-educated, stupid and greedy leadership.

Yet, all the tech companies give multiple rounds of coding and personality tests which most candidates from USA and abroad fail. No one who is not an ace in their work is kept in their job. My company hires many people from around the world and cut them off without any problem if they cannot deliver.

People from India were not coming here as illegal immigrants. If someone is coming illegally, USA has its whore Pakistan to blame for that. Most American Indians would want Trump to use ICE and send these illegal people back. But, Trump is also a product of his genes and this country. He will always execute policies like a chomu.

Many American techies would love to get hired. Oracle just canned a lot of people, as have other high tech corporations. Perhaps your HR department is funneling only the H1B/OPT resumes while holding back resumes from American applicants?

Or maybe there aren't American applicants. Find me a 22 year old that wants to provide tech support for a living.

I know an American born, recent college graduate who would be happy to start in tech support.

Great, tell him to apply for jobs.

This is the first step. Get up in the morning. Apply for jobs.

It is an extremely competitive job market especially for tech/engineers in India. In order to stand out, people then opt for Masters degrees. Since Masters programs are better in the US compared to India, people choose to study in the US. Job applications here are then obviously more from Indians. Population of US is 300 million and population of India is 1.5 billion. The magnitude is right there.

I am from tech and we receive resumes from Indians and Americans both but I'd say a lot more from Indians. Our interviewing process is extensive and elaborate and it depends on who makes it through based on qualifications and experience. We have a pretty good diversity. Let me also tell you that just because you see resumes of Indians pouring in doesn't mean they all get recruited.

OP, are you new into recruiting?

This poster again. Having worked in the tech industry for a long time, I have seen that Indians are more patient, diligent, tenacious and resilient. More than smartness, those factors are more contributing. American engineers are quite smart and nerdy as only those take up engineering who truly have the aptitude. But they are more about choosing work-life balance, pursuing hobbies, not working late nights or weekends. Employers want those who can slog and deliver results and I have always seen Indians having an edge on that front.

Willing to get completely taken advantage of.
Americans competing with people who have no personal standards or bigger life perspective. Sorry that’s what it is. It’s too sad because I wish for more pleasant evenings, family time, health for my immigrating Indian coworkers.

Actually MAGA is not competing. They are not going into STEM fields or getting into higher education. They are not well prepared in K-12 to get into college on their academic achievements. Their parents are not paying for their college. They are graduating with large student debts. Most MAGA don't go to college. Most MAGA don't travel. For the richest country in the world, they have poor standard of living. So the MAGA no longer have personal standards or bigger life perspective that the world admires.

Since most immigrating Indians will have continue to have an intact family for the entirety of their life, they will earn economic security, they will build their social network, their kids will excel in school, college, job and do very well, AND they will have home cooked meals in the evening...they are doing alright. Also, health is indeed something they are paying attention to. Most will get health services, reproductive health care, pharma and vaccines in India, even if USA dismantles its own healthcare. You see, at heart, India just has universal middle class values that are good for Humanity.

DP. Then why do they have to immigrate at all? Shouldn’t life be grand back in India?

So what? You will be dead if you stop trying.

My kid (American born citizen doing STEM) got internships every single year of college because he applies to no less than 150+ places. He hears back from only 1 or 2. Excellent stats and experience. Continues to work on other sources of revenue on his spare time.

There are still many jobs, there are many platforms, there are many business opportunities, there are new markets, there are good fits, there are good employers. But, they also want flexibility, competence and hard work from their employees.

This is a Capitalist Economy. You want Socialism - go to another country.

Also, your loser mentality will make ChatGPT suggest suicide to you even before AI eats up your job. As it is, most of MAGA are stupid enough to have voted against their self-interest and lack basic understanding of the world.

“MAGA don’t go to college, etc…”
So many elitist opinions in responses to this post. Look at the demographics of who voted MAGA resulting in Trump winning popular vote too (hint: not a bunch of dumb red state rubes driving pickups with gun racks waving confederate flags).

This is simply not true right now. Congrats to your kid, that’s fantastic. But as the opportunities for everyone continue to dry up as they have for the past few months, no one will be able to escape the ripple effect eventually. You need paying customers in a Capitalist economy.
