Ranked? More kids apply to VT because it has popular programs - like engineering - that WM doesn’t have, and non-engineering programs have lower admission standards. For the liberal arts WM is better, both in actual experience and rigor and reputation.

The data here are from the school district. That means they're very accurate as to the number of applications submitted to each of these schools--because the school district knows where it has released transcripts, etc.--but acceptances will be under counted, especially at less selective, lower yielding schools--because kids need to tell them where to send that final transcript in June, but there's no requirement to tick the boxes indicating that you also were accepted to JMU and ODU, e.g., if you're going to UVA.

VT is better ranked than W&M if you want to cite UNSWR. Don’t cite USNWR to say UVA is better than UNC and Wisconsin if you can’t also acknowledge USNWR says VT is better than W&M.

You cannot be serious. Wisconsin has an outstanding academic reputation for undergraduate education and world class graduate schools. That it’s not as selective in admissions doesn’t mean it’s not in UVA’s league. Of course it is.

Better for what and who? Since my child wants to study chemical engineering, VT is better for him than W&M would be. For someone else, W&M would potentially be better.

Also, kids that were accepted ED somewhere withdrew from other schools so they are, I think. counted as applications to those other schools but then it looks like they didn't get in....because they dropped their applications. The reasons are all recorded in Naviance so the schools know how many were accepted/rejected/withdrawn etc., but all you see in the magainze are "number applied" and "number accepted." The difference isn't necessarily rejections.

You’re missing the point. The uva booster is blindly following USNWR. If that’s their argument then they have to also acknowledge VT is ranked better than W&M in USNWR.

I think it’s a list of where kids from APS matriculated. It isn’t a ranking.

There's absolutely no way that VCU rejected that many APS students - something's off.

I beg to differ, it was really interesting last year to see DD’s friends getting accepted or rejected from certain schools. If schools thought your GPA was way too high, they were not going to accept you - yield protection. Also, unfortunately, I heard of a handful of kids getting rejected due to AI detected essays.

Public colleges don’t yield protect
Public colleges don’t yield protect
Public colleges don’t yield protect
Public colleges don’t yield protect
Public colleges don’t yield protect

In an era when the higher education landscape is bizarre & changing, beware of anybody claiming absolutes.

These days you can’t even claim that no Ivy League presidents are plagiarists, no freshman quarterbacks are millionaires, a fake claim that you’re a rowing prodigy can’t you in an elite college, and no women’s sports champions have a schlong. Since we’ve all gotten used to those realities, is anybody going to be surprised if a public college does a little yield protection?

Yeah, you’re being ridiculous. “Yield protection” may happen, sure — never say never about anything — but it’s so typical DCUM that so many posters convince themselves that their kid is getting rejected by schools because the kid is too good to get in. Laughable.

+1
Happens every.single.year.

Trust a UVA booster to claim there's any significant difference in schools ranked one digit apart. So ludicrous.

Except, as the PP stated, VT is ranked higher than W&M. So if you're the PP saying UVA is "better" than UNC and Wisconsin because it's ranked higher, then you would have to agree, VT is better than W&M. And plenty of students choose VT for liberal arts, not engineering. It's an all-around excellent school.
