I thought Case Western used merit aid to lure kids to Cleveland?? It’s a fantastic school that gets overlooked by many high star kids. |
OP here, he has a 3.92 UW, 4.7W GPA. Nothing low about it. Also he's retaking the SAT this month and next, 780 math, 700 reading so he can superscore higher. |
But the major? Alignment to ECs? Narrative? How does his public school do with ED to Emory? |
Where did she choose? |
Emory and Vanderbilt give like 20-30 kids merit. That's it.
Those are kids with a 4.0/1580 and 5's on a dozen APs but more importantly--things like the Regeneron prize or some other outstanding national-level narrative. Basically the HYP kids and not the generic great students. You need the perfect grades PLUS the narrative for these merit awards or for HYP. |
Georgetown wants top of the class. What is OP's ranking in school? Georgetown is highly GPA sensitive. 3.92 is good for many schools, falls short for Georgetown. You really need 4.0 uw to have a chance. Forget about merit. |
Take a look at some of these: https://www.reddit.com/r/collegeresults/s/eOt4NN5XPw https://www.reddit.com/r/collegeresults/s/eawxSHx5AO https://www.reddit.com/r/collegeresults/s/O174C3F4SZ |
Not true at our private. |
My kid sounds similar to your kid but with higher stats and more humanities-focused. Strong EC’s but nothing unique or stand-out. Waitlisted to both Emory and GU, and his CC made it clear that both were high reaches for him. Definitely encourage your kid to look at both and throw his hat in the ring, but don’t get misled by the GPA/Test scores being above the median. Kids can check off every box and have a great narrative, and still be rejected/waitlisted. Encourage your kid to love other less selective schools that check off some of his most important boxes. Visit those schools, if you can, and get excited about those . Hope for the best but be prepared for a Plan B or C. |
Not for those STEM majors though. Maybe Econ? Try and show huge demonstrated interest. |
He needs to create/strengthen his narrative. Right now seems weak & boring and unconnected to major. |
Georgetown is a far easier admit from DMV schools, especially private, than it is for the rest of the country. They respect the grading of the local privates and will take unhooked kids squarely in the middle of the class or even below because they know these schools and know how hard they grade. If you're coming from the rest of the US it's a really challenging admission. |
Same goes for Emory for Georgia kids. Emory has to compete with GA Tech and UGA (free tuition for in-state) for high stats GA kids. |
Really should look at Rhodes or Tulane. We know several kids at Rhodes with excellent outcomes. PhD programs, T14 law schools. DS at Tulane. In spite of the hate, solid choice for the right kid, especially with those interests. |
Try unhooked private. Private schools have a lot of hooked applicants. Georgetown still requires a very high GPA from an unhooked private kid. A lot more GPA sensitive than Emory. Believe it or not. |
