My kid (MCPS W) was denied with 3.9 UW and 1450. Humanities major and related ECs with awards; 10 APs with 4s-5s. I went to grad school at G'town, but am not a major donor. Would have been full pay. We knew it was a reach and weren't surprised. |
With those stats, it would be almost impossible to get into Emory and Rice without a serious hook. And Georgetown would be very unlikely |
You work at Emory or something? How would you know this? Emory retention rate is 96%. |
Right? But only a parent or admissions staff believes that, according to earlier poster. Georgetown has fewer applicants, hence the lower acceptance rate. When they go to Common App, that rate is going to plummet to single digits--far lower than Emory's. |
Emory is seen as the “fall back” or “consolation prize” for many kids who are wanting to attend an Ivy. Sort of like Tufts or Northwestern a generation ago. And it’s so unfortunate. First of all Emory doesn’t have anything in common with the Ivies. It has its own unique combination of things. For a kid who’s interested in pre-med or business, doesn’t care about sports, and would take advantage of Atlanta, it can be a better fit than most of the Ivies. |
Why do random parents think they know other kids' GPAs? Or any stats at all? |
But Georgetown isn't a fall back? Emory performs better against the ivys for Cross admits that Georgetown. You're replying to yourself in these comments. If Georgetown was so awesome it would have higher test scores despite being test required. |
Well the Cathedral schools publish names of the top 20%. |
Np. I went to Georgetown a million years ago and it was definitely an ivy fallback school back then. I still remember someone selling shirts the first week of school that basically said "Georgetown. Rejection never felt so good." On a recent tour, I asked the kid why he had picked Georgetown and he said something about it being good for pre-med. Reading between the lines, that answer implied that he didn't get into other schools he might have preferred. |
He is in CAS and applied with an interest in the PPE major. Not a ton of aid but manageable. We're getting almost half off the sticker price. |
So, you received need-based aid and we have been talking specifically about merit aid. |
Okay, but that PP said Sidwell and went as far as saying one's kid "wasn't even close" to a 4.0. Unless it's their own kid, why would they know it? The answer: they don't. |
Navinance. GPA and test scores. |
Meh, every school t10-25 is full of kids who didn't get into an Ivy. |
Gtown CAS applicant. Unhooked. 3.8UW, 1570 SAT single sitting. High course rigor, private school. Strong ECs, but no national level awards. Solid essays. Rejected.
Naviance suggests Georgetown is very GPA sensitive for unhooked kids. |
