Stats for Emory/Georgetown?

Neither for Vandy with that stats. None.

BTW…if your kid wants a city school, what exactly does that mean?

Able to walk to a ton of the action within a mile or able to get to the action via a quick Uber ride or public transport?

May seem insignificant, but a kid attending NYU is definitely enjoying a more “city” experience than a kid at Fordham.

I don’t know your kid’s interests…but perhaps you should consider Ga Tech as it is much cheaper and is really walking distance to a bunch of Atlanta cool neighborhoods…while Emory has a different vibe though is a short Uber to the same.

Emory seems to be more forgiving of lower GPA’s and not being in the top 20% of the class- especially in ED1. Just based on what I’ve seen at my kid’s private where the majority of the kids aren’t hooked- mostly kids from UMC families whose parents are professionals or successful in local businesses. However, the rest of the application has to stand out too.

For Georgetown, it depends on the other apps from your school. Our large public MD school had at least 30 apply RD, and the ones who got in were 4.0 and top test scores. DC got a WL at 3.94.

GWU is more “city” than Georgetown and the chances of getting merit aid are better there. Another place where being male helps.

Fordham may give merit for this kid.
Shoot for NYU but no merit.

American is ranked lower and not really for STEM but it’s another DC school that offers generous merit.

DC wants a big city and we would like at least a small scholarship.
3.9UW, 9 AP's all 4's
1480, taking the ACT to see if he can do better
Debate
HCOL public Delaware.

Major? Humanities?

Econ or Business with a STEM double, maybe stats or chem.

Honestly kiss of death.
Aim lower.

Georgetown does not award merit aid—it’s a meet-full-need school.

As a PP notes, GW is a good option if looking for city school + merit.

Make sure your kid has targets and safeties that offer some of what Emory/Vanderbilt/Rice may offer + merit.

I would consider Case Western as a possibility, along with Pitt, GWU and Miami.

Agree. This kind of kid will get slaughtered in T25 admissions with those majors - what other ECs? Besides debate?

Apply undecided or something debate adjacent. Econ and stats and Chem are all arts & sciences - so not limiting yourself.

If your kid has some great debate policy related stuff, he might be a more convincing social sciences major?

Case Western no way with that major and that stats.

Having higher stats than the median is not a significant advantage at a lot of T-25’s. It’s just one data point and everything else is important too, down to gender and choice of major.

💯 agree. We saw this in action last cycle.

DD accepted RD with 4.0/4.7/1530, psych major to both Emory and GU, no merit. got ~ 27-28k merit from GW.
