What makes responders on these boards say things like, "I'm sorry your kid didn't get in."

Op- in case you haven’t gotten the memo, some (not all) Americans are just mean and selfish. It’s a hyper competitive atmosphere where many people try to make themselves feel good about themselves by putting others down. It’s an anonymous forum so people don’t hide their true selves.

If you’re one of the nice folks, best to just ignore those mean comments as if they aren’t even there.

Schools admit a bunch of low score kids of all races whether it’s legacy, wealthy donors, regional diversity, celebrity offspring, athletes, gender diversity and the list goes on. It’s better not to make assumptions about why a kid did or didn’t get in to a school.

+1 That's the issue. The kinds of comments being responded to tend to be unnecessarily vicious, suggesting bitterness rather than any kind of rational or fair analysis.

You usually see this when someone with no apparent connection to a college, and seems to know very little about the college, and who comes out with a bunch of nasty, often off base generic comments. Which does raise the question. So, why do people continue to bash/knock a school with low, single-digit acceptance rates? There is no reason other than they are bitter that their own child didn't get in to the Boston campus, which is extremely selective.

No, NEU is not different. Many schoolers have regular boosters and haters who sink into little spats that add nothing to the conversation.

Agree with your second comment. Similarly, PPs who say the “didn’t get in” comment is justified by a negative comment are invoking the time-honored playground excuse: well, he started it!

Don’t want to derail, but NEU’s press and interview from admin acknowledge they gamed the system. This isn’t a label people are making up; they are parroting back the press (which was based on NEU interviews).

Why are you insinuating that only Americans are mean and selfish? The college topic has mean and competitive people from all backgrounds, especially on DCUM.
