Harvard no longer allowed to enroll international students

Anonymous
I see Harvard’s strategy of telling Americans that they have to be allowed to import international students because Americans are too stupid and too poor to be worth educating is earning about as much support from Americans as you’d predict.

+1 I thought Republicans were a fan of limited government intervention. Trump is crushing the life of all of our prestigious American universities and research bodies.

Why do you think this is good? I’m honestly curious. This seems bonkers to me.

Np. There is growing sentiment, across many circles I am in, that American universities should be for Americans. Maybe no more than 5% international. The global vs. homegrown balance has gotten out of whack.

Don't disagree.

Even If you agree with the premise, you do realize this is bananas? That the federal government blackmailing universities to comply with its demands is counter to everything the US stands for? I can’t believe some people are ok with an authoritative regime bc they think it means their kid gets a better shot at an Ivy.

NP: My kids won't ever apply to Harvard. I don't think the way this is being implemented is correct all and agree he is a tyrant.

But the idea that they take so many full pay rich international kids (30% of the entire Harvard student body is international - what!) is not right.
2 kids in college, 1 still to go. None applied to Harvard.
It's just about educating our people first and foremost. I do think that is not a bad thing, and it plays well with American voters. The optics are good politically at home (and that's what matters with voters).

None of what you've written has anything to do with this though. It's just about putting the squeeze on an institution that's stood to the regime. Justify that with talk about a different issue is just justifying fascism no matter who you voted for. NP.

I haven't been following it closely. I know there is anger and resentment in my private school community about the number of international students at EVERY top private college. This isn't a Harvard thing.

Thousands of students coming from across the globe to be educated in the US, spend tax dollars here, and then contribute to the US economy if they stay; or disseminate US value if they go home.

A true travesty.

Why not have American students take their spot, instead of having to go to Europe for college? Have you not seen all the top stats posts of kids not getting into T20 and going abroad? That's a true travesty as well.

Because your kid is not the best of the best. How many times do you need to be told that?

I mean, yeah. Racism, bigotry and ignorance are on the rise nation-wise. We know that.

There are a few frequent posters on this site whose kids were screwed in the college process this year and headed to Europe. Really elite, top stats kids.
Maybe they'll get off the WL.

Well, for one, top European universities cost a fraction of what American universities do. Oxford/Cambridge are about 40K/year at higher tuition for international students, while GW and U Mich is 90K for an American student. I know which one I would prefer for my kid. Most other European universities are even cheaper than the British ones--a friend is sending her kid for 10K/year to a good university in Belgium.

My kids are both at T20 (one Ivy and one not).
But thanks.

Guys, let’s all stop for a moment of silence in honor of the top stats kids not getting into T20. A true travesty indeed.

Still not good enough for Harvard, though.
