Do you think celebs and/or their PR hang out on DCUM or other social media like Reddit

Definitely right about that one.

Agree.
This is not the only one. They all start with some gushing statement: "Celebrity's million followers can't believe her stunning appearance last Saturday at Place!"

If a celeb has a PR team, it should definitely be tracking everything said about them online.

Yep

Part of an overall strategy, yes. They don’t care about DC moms, it’s just astroturfing and manipulating google results. AI bots, interns, human shills in foreign body shops the whole nine.

On reddit, definitely!

The Blake Lively thread has hundreds of pages and people have been posting daily since January. I'm sure PR people notice.

There are "social listening" subscription services like Talkwalker which PR firms use to turn up mentions of their clients on social media and the internet. There's another one that covers YouTube and video. They aren't using Google alerts, the software is more sophiciated than that, but they are listening to what is being said.

That's true. I got trained on one such software at work this year but don't use it. If you surface quotes that you want to use you can click to go to the original web link it came from.

I suppose some people might stumble upon DCUM from social media listening tools but it would be more likely that would happen for rare topics. I don't think topics like "SSFS will stay open" are being professionally monitored using social listening software. I'd more believe the Bayesian yachtbuilder's crisis PR people got here from some kind of tool. Anything common like comments on Melania's hats is unlikely to lead to DCUM first.

Other social media absolutely.

Well, people outside of dcum find threads through Google searches…the Hilaria Baldwin thread, for example or the Jen influencer person…and I have a hunch the Blake Lively legal thread case has been taken over by lawyers, etc from far beyond DMV…and the DCA plane crash thread…I feel like people in the aviation world found it…so it’s possible.

I think you overestimate the Google score of DCUM. It's probably often the top results in your searches because you are using it on a browser that either knows your location (if in the DMV) or you are logged into Google and they know your browsing history. I never used to see DCUM search results, but then I became aware if the website when I became a parent and now it often pops up in my results.

No one I know outside the DC area has ever heard of it.

It’s for the chattering class. It’s a special group.

They may get sentiment charts, or some kind of overview of online sentiment, but they don't care about each comment.

There are A list celebrities that don't even have managers, much less a dedicated PR team. They usually have agents and the rest is highly subject to their personal preference and economic situation.

Reading comp. ‘If a celeb has a PR team’

Also, if there’s a crisis

Celebs don’t do anything most days. Those idle narcissistic freaks have tons of google alerts and DCUM is bound to generate some hits. It’s very likely they themselves and people close to them. It’s so easy to post here, how could you not.

Yes. I have seen reddit forums where I suspect most of the sycophants are the celebrity or people the celebrity pays.

Totally.

I think Par folks definitely monitor and even post on Reddit because Reddit's SEO is crazy high. It's often one of the top results in an Google search for any topic. So knowing what people on Reddit are saying about a certain celeb, or trying to guide conversation there towards desirable topics, could have real impact on a celeb's rep.

DCUM is too niche. Very occasionally a celeb thread here goes viral and maybe that will get on PR radar and maybe they would even come post in that thread. But it's rare and if the thread is in a big controversy discussed elsewhere (like the Blake Lively/Baldoni thing, most royal family stuff, both of which get tons of discussion eksewhere) I just don't think DCUM ranks.

The only DCUM threads that I think might have grabbed PR attention the way Reddit does is that Hilaria thread uncovering her take accent/heritage. DCUM even got mentioned in the media coverage of that scandal I think.

But usually you think DCUM flies under the radar of celeb PR, probably viewed correctly as downstream of outlets like tabloids, Reddit, major celeb and gossip sites, etc.

+1

That said I do think that after the Hilaria thing started to go viral her PR people were on here.
