I recall all three trying to lower health care costs and Republicans fighting them at every step. Blame the GOP for keeping costs high to profit their corporate interests.

This EO is a shakedown of big Pharma, nothing more. Let’s see what Pfizer, Merck, etc give Trump’s “library” to prevent any actual cost controls from becoming effective.

The prices f drugs around the world will go up. So we won’t necessarily get their current prices. We will get their future prices, which should still be lower than our current prices. When their prices go up too high, treatment of certain diseases will abruptly end. Also, certain countries with defy patents and start to manufacture drugs on their own. This should end in further price reductions.

Trump: "I'm directing the Dept of Commerce to begin investigations of foreign nations that extort drug companies ... we're gonna tell those countries, like those represented by the EU, that that game is up. Sorry. If they want to get cute, then they don't have to sell cars into the US anymore."

This is nothing like what Biden did. Biden negotiated with pharmas on behalf of the government programs that provide medication to US citizens. That had a meaningful and material positive impact on the mostly seniors who benefited from those negotiations.

What Trump is doing is basically going to raise drug prices across the board, not provide relief to the people who need it.

This is really a great deal for Americans.

If he actually manages to accomplish this I will be thrilled.

Drug prices are often set by the government overseas. Pharma cantjus unilaterally raise prices in many places. One hold out is all the MFN needs to trigger a low price. Azerbaijan, you listening?

There’s no “deal.” Trump tends to overpromise and underdeliver. Only time will tell if anything comes of this.

Other countries force the drug companies to sell at close to cost. If they raise prices, then they will be removed from selling in those countries.

President Trump signed an executive order asking pharmaceutical companies to voluntarily lower their prices, but cited no obvious legal authority to mandate changes.

It's kinda like the RFKjr food dye thing - asking companies to voluntarily promise. It's a lot of bluster and very little substance.

Agreed.

MFN pricing for drugs is a progressive wet dream. And the principal objectors to this during Trump I was Big Pharma and Republicans. Biden didn't like it. He retracted the Trump Reg that would have forced MFN pricing in Medicare.

Why are Dems so opposed to it now? To me, it just symbolizes Democrats being opposed to every Republican utterance. And Republicans objecting to every Democratic utterance.

We’re not opposed to it. We just don’t think it’s going to happen.
