Was this “disgusting”?

Anonymous
1/3 of a kitchen bag?! That is nothing, really. A small amount. Not much larger than plastic grocery bag I keep in my car for stray trash (and I often throw that in the trash can at the gas station near the pumps- because I tidy while the gas is pumping).

Not a big deal at all. The lady was being rude- these hall monitor types drive me crazy.

That being said, I don’t see what the big deal would’ve been to just leave it in your own trash either, or how this is different than any other week.

It was illegal, and weird, and selfish. And since the reason you didn't want that in your yard was that it was going to rot, yeah it was disgusting too.

But what if everyone did it just that once this week?

What if everyone bought their groceries at one specific Safeway on Saturdays at 10am? Wouldn't work.

What if everyone decided to play board games every week around the Columbus Memorial Fountain? Chaos.

Just because everyone can't do it doesn't make it wrong, PP. You need additional assumptions to make that case. It's not a slam dunk.

Public dumping is illegal and OP could be fined. Your reasoning is illogical. It’s not illegal to go to the grocery store on a Saturday morning.

She put it in a trash can. You're responding as if she flung her trash all over the parking lot.

Idgaf and rats are everywhere in the dmv.

This doesn't make any sense. If it was only a third of a bag, it wasn't even ready to go to the bin. You could have just kept using it for the next day or two, then taken it to the bin when it was actually full, and it would sit there for 3-4 days like you probably have trash in your bin for 3-4 days every week.

Also if the idea of food waste like bad fruit unsettles you so deeply that you'd drive across town and break the law to get it away from you, consider joining a compost pickup or something.

The difference is that gas stations put their trash cans there as an invitation and expectation that you will clean your car. They have people to monitor and empty it as needed so it doesn’t become unusable for others. Park trash cans aren’t planning for everyone to bring a 1/3 trash can from home. An equivalent would be if you brought a full bag of trash from home to dump at the gas station. If they saw you doing that regularly they would ask you to stop.

We have people in our neighborhood you will regularly just place small bags of trash that include old food and diapers in the street or on the curb. THAT is disgusting.

lol, how is she trying to make sure it gets collected today? Do you think she researched the park trash scheduke?

People are being dramatic on this thread.

Yes what OP did was a little selfish, but it was a one off. It would be like if you jaywalked on a busy street one time to make an appointment, or double parked one time to run in for takeout because you were in an unusual hurry. Those are annoying, selfish behaviors. But if someone did them ONE TIME and felt bad enough about it to post about it here, I'd be like "don't stress about it, next time come up with another solution."

I am glad we get trash pick up twice a week. Every once in a while it's only once a week because of holiday scheduling and it's pretty gross.

I’m totally curious- what do you normally do with leftover food OP? Doesn’t it always sit for a week, until next pickup?

For example my own trash pickup day is Friday. So- food scraps from the weekend sit all week. It is generally fine. Though in warmer months we avoid throwing meat items until trash day (I put it in a bag in the freezer).

Public trash cans are an extremely limited resource.

You shouldn't double park for takeout. You aren't that important.

Terrible analogy. The trash can would stink no matter if OP used it or not. Dog walkers put literal feces in there.

I bet you got 300 on the verbal SAT.

It's no big deal IMO, but take it to an apartment complex with oversized bins outside next time. No one will notice or blink.

She’s saying that because people say it’s unlawful to use those dumpsters. Not that the trash itself was disgusting.
