Georgia vs Ohio State: Senior Son is Torn

OP, I’m as fervently in support of Ohio State as the PP is UGA. I can make many of the same claims: my DD is there and loves it and her best friend was rejected. I also can’t say enough good things about the university or Columbus. I can make claims about rankings, etc.

But here’s the thing: all that matters is where your child ultimately wants to go. They are both great universities. Fighting over weather, rankings, football teams, etc… it isn't worthwhile. Your child will go to the one that tugs a bit more. And he'll end up happy with his choice. Either way.

You are correct that the difference in ranking and football is insignificant. But the difference in weather is a major factor for a lot of people.

Okay but which Is better academically if that's your main focus?

UGA

Ohio State ranks higher in USNWR. But honestly, that doesn’t matter. The schools are very similarly matched. They are both well-regarded, major research universities. Both have high-ranking programs. Trying to say one is clearly better than the other is tricky; you’re splitting hairs.

UGA and UF have distanced themselves from other state flagships including Ohio State as well as Wisco, Tennessee, Kentucky,& VaTech. If those two schools aren't yet on par with Michigan, Texas, UNC and Virginia then they are rapidly closing in.

+100 By the time the kid retires UGA will be seen as on par with Michigan and UVA and UGA grads will be lamenting how they couldn’t get in now, etc. Not sure the future demographic movement in the Midwest will support the same happening for Ohio State. The south is hot right now and UGA is seen as one of the top flagships.

First try to catch up with Ohio State before you can even begin to take on Texas, Let alone UVA and UNC. Michigan, along with UCB and UCLA, are tiers above UGA.

Like it or not people think of UGA more along with Texas, Michigan and catching UVA, UNC.

Some people in Georgia you mean. The rest of the planet thinks otherwise.

That’s not what I mean and you’re wrong.

You’re not going to get an answer here. This decision needs to be based on personal feel.

Two posts ago, someone wrote GA by a landslide. I’d say the same about Ohio State.

Ultimately, your child’s heart will tug one way a little more than the other. And that’s the school to choose.

Both are great choices.

+1. I don't think your kid should let the posters of DCUM decide.

Osu alum here. Meh. I’d rather be in GA

Ohio-born GA resident. So torn when the two football teams play each other. I know people with kids at both OSU and UGA and they’re loving it. Congrats to your kid- have him visit both schools and decide. He can’t go wrong with either.

A parent on FB recently wrote they she couldn’t decide between two colleges when she was 18. Her dad told her to do a coin flip , but to go with her gut reaction TO the coin flip decision.

Good luck to your son, OP!

Georgia is more fun. Just a happier place

Go where the greater opportunities are, so Georgia. The south is vibrant and growing. Ohio might be dumb enough to pick Vivek.

There’s one thing I find noteworthy on this thread. There are several anti-Ohio posts that are rude and resort to stereotypes. Notice that the Ohio posts have shared what they like about Columbus, but they haven’t taken low shots at Georgia.

No dog in this fight, but this is an accurate observation of this thread.
