Georgia vs Ohio State: Senior Son is Torn

OSU and UGA are both great schools ranked in the 40s, close enough that there is no meaningful difference in the numbers.

I’ve lived in GA and OH. I’d happily move back to Ohio. Columbus is in my top two favorite places I’ve lived, and I’ve been all over the US.

Columbus is simply special. The city has so many wonderful areas: German Village, Short North, Italian Village, Victorian Village, the Arena District… they all have their own feel. And the university has a beauty and an energy I love, and I didn’t even attend OSU.

Do you want a big city with a college or a college town? Hot or cold? These are two very different colleges.

Georgia in a landslide. There's a reason why it's one of the hottest schools, and along with Florida, has markedly improved its standing among public state flagships. UGA and UF have distanced themselves from other state flagships including Ohio State as well as Wisco, Tennessee, Kentucky,& VaTech. If those two schools aren't yet on par with Michigan, Texas, UNC and Virginia then they are rapidly closing in.

Is Georgia more economically strong?

Try comparing student reports on UNIGO (they answer questions about the type of students who go there, social and academic climates, etc)

+100 By the time the kid retires UGA will be seen as on par with Michigan and UVA and UGA grads will be lamenting how they couldn’t get in now, etc. Not sure the future demographic movement in the Midwest will support the same happening for Ohio State. The south is hot right now and UGA is seen as one of the top flagships.

OP,
You’re not going to get an answer here. This decision needs to be based on personal feel.

Two posts ago, someone wrote GA by a landslide. I’d say the same about Ohio State.

Ultimately, your child’s heart will tug one way a little more than the other. And that’s the school to choose.

Both are great choices.

And yet Columbus is known as one of the faster growing cities, in population and in opportunity.

And the south is hot “right now.” Trends always change.

OSU has so many clubs and sports and so many things to do- focus isn’t on fraternities- though they have them. Georgia has a bigger focus on fraternities.

Migration to the Sun Belt is exceeding and is predicted to far exceed the Rust Belt in the future.

OSU hate is very common but OSU is ranked way higher and going as a t30 school.

Native Ohioan and GA transplant. He can’t go wrong with either. It may come down to whether he wants city v college town or Warm weather v. snow. And his academic/career interests. Good luck and Congrats!
