College and University Discussion
We just visited and this is not really a factor IMO. There are bridges that go over it and tunnels that go under it. Doesn't seem to detract from the campus. I think my kid is going to JMU. Didn't apply to UVA or W&M (where older sib goes) because they don't offer a BFA in studio art. Kid got into VCU Arts as well but liked the JMU campus a lot more. |

I completely agree with this ^^. |
DP. Not sure how Charlottesville is any less "in the middle of nowhere." At any rate, the Shenandoah Valley was a big attraction for my kids. To each their own. |
Not to bring math into this, but the census bureau puts Staunton and Harrisonburg into the same CSA. Each area has about 125,000 people, for a total of 250k in the Valley. Charlottesville MSA, on the other side of the mountains, has about 225,000 people. |
I completely disagree. |

I went to Virginia tech and I love to hate UVA. It's practically a hobby.
However, I was just at UVA for a tour and it is a beautiful campus and sells itself very well. It's not for everyone, sure, but it's very pretty. Can we not just agree that Virginia has lots of very good options? Let the kids pick which one they prefer. |
JMU is more rural and UVA has more of an urban feel to it with access to better shopping and restaurants. There's even a Trader Joes nearby. Again, people like different things. |
Love this. |
So does most of the world. UVA is near the top of most beautiful campus lists every year. Never seen the other two mentioned. |
So Charlottesville is smaller? Weird flex. |
OK. But I have seen Georgetown listed many times as well, which boggles my mind. |
| My kid chose JMU over Yale. |
I can't even get over how someone can think this. Georgetown is objectively beautiful. And UVA in my opinion is tiers above JMU. One is a generic college campus by the mountains with nothing much to do outside of that and the other a walkable campus with beautiful architecture in a charming and vibrant college town with a lot of stuff to do in the area. |
