They don't take it personally and they appreciate knowing ASAP so they can go to their waitlist. It's a nice courtesy to do as soon as you know you are not accepting.

Someday, people will understand that someone declining an offer of admission doesn’t lead a school to tap their waitlist.

This.

Most schools over accept with the assumption some will decline. They don't go to the waitlist with every decline.

I would argue that the schools that have historically higher yield are likely more careful with their acceptances because they also don't want to end up in an over enrolled situation. While I am sure the waitlist at the big three is large, I do think they are more likely to move because in this area it's likely that the same families are applying to multiple schools. These schools don't want to end up in an over enrolled situation.

It’s simply incorrect. They know what their yield is - they’ve been doing it for years. The same kids applying to GDS, Sidwell and Maret have been applying to Sidwell, GDS and Maret for years. In any case, there’s no joy in being correct but it’s important for people on waitlists to have a realistic perspective as they need to make real-life decisions.

I believe I saw one or two yesterday for K, but I thought we’d see more people jumping up and down about Sidwell. Not saying that in a mean way; we would have been had we gotten in

There are always people who get off the waitlist. So sure, have a backup option - you have to. But I also don't think it's helpful to say that nobody ever gets off the waitlist - there are kids who do every year. My kid was one and I know many others who were in that situation. I can say one thing for sure - if you don't express interest, don't contact admission, etc. you will not get off the waiting list. But just like every year, some kids will get off the waitlist at many of these schools.

Nobody said that literally no one gets off the waitlist. But for the schools who either don’t reject outright or build huge waitlists, the probability of getting off of it are too low to factor into decision-making. If you happen to get lucky, it’s great and go celebrate. But, the glimmer of hope that a waiting list provides is not helpful or material to parents that are trying to figure out what to do.

It seems like it was a super tough year to get into Sidwell!

Similar to us last year and I remember how bad it felt. We got in off the WL and love where we landed. Wishing you good luck!

I’m happy to have found this community! As a first time parent - the application process was completely foreign to me. But here we are!

Acceptances: Holy Trinity School, The Potomac School, St Patrick’s, Beauvoir

Waitlists: Maret

Plan to Attend: This is the week to decide! We are weighing pros & cons between Beauvoir, Holy Trinity & The Potomac School

Any insight is welcome & appreciated!

What school has the better commute? (Is that Holy Trinity in Bowie?)

What’s more important to you - religious vs secular education?

Do you want to do this process again? K-12 at Potomac and Holy Trinity (?) vs Beauvoir where you’d have to apply out again

Answering those questions should point to the right school
