This is silly but I feel absolutely gutted for one of the three schools we have to turn down. I really like this school a lot and we hit it off with the HOS. The other schools I’m fine with, but I am dreading informing this very close second
They don't take it personally and they appreciate knowing ASAP so they can go to their waitlist. It's a nice courtesy to do as soon as you know you are not accepting.
Most schools over accept with the assumption some will decline. They don't go to the waitlist with every decline.
I would argue that the schools that have historically higher yield are likely more careful with their acceptances because they also don't want to end up in an over enrolled situation. While I am sure the waitlist at the big three is large, I do think they are more likely to move because in this area it's likely that the same families are applying to multiple schools. These schools don't want to end up in an over enrolled situation.
It’s simply incorrect. They know what their yield is - they’ve been doing it for years. The same kids applying to GDS, Sidwell and Maret have been applying to Sidwell, GDS and Maret for years. In any case, there’s no joy in being correct but it’s important for people on waitlists to have a realistic perspective as they need to make real-life decisions.
There are always people who get off the waitlist. So sure, have a backup option - you have to. But I also don't think it's helpful to say that nobody ever gets off the waitlist - there are kids who do every year. My kid was one and I know many others who were in that situation. I can say one thing for sure - if you don't express interest, don't contact admission, etc. you will not get off the waiting list. But just like every year, some kids will get off the waitlist at many of these schools.
