For clarification, yes, this is for Kindergarten.

Doing some early research/fact-finding even though odds are low: I'm maybe interested in HB middle school. What gives me pause is there aren't intensified classes. Could my kid take prealgebra in sixth if she tests into it? Are there other extension opportunities? How hard is it to go to HB for middle but then WL IB?

Outside of DCUM where else is a good spot to read reviews/gather opinions from others who have gone through the option schools?

If you got into ATS, take it. If you don’t like it, you can always transfer back to your neighborhood school.

We all know she’s going to take it. She just wants to brag and get attention for a non achievement.

You can’t be serious in thinking this? We got a spot by chance and now we have two weeks to decide and want more details on where I will send my kid to school - how in any way is that bragging?

Absolutely. If you are not excited about this but rather crowdsourcing this "decision" give up the spot to somebody who will cherish it.

Take your time. I don’t know why people fight over this mediocre public elementary. What makes it mediocre, you ask? While it may have good test scores while the kids are in elementary, there’s is no measurable difference in how ATS students perform when they get to middle school. Just as “meh” as the others.

If you’re in SA, take it. If you’re in NA and districted for one of the higher-performing schools, I don’t know if I would. The bus comes REALLY early for ATS, and having your kid’s friends spread all over the county is a real downside. Going to school with all of your neighborhood buddies is better.

Disagree. Had significant remediation for kid who went to ATS for dyslexia and had to pay for it for the child who didn't go to ATS. (went to NA school with something like 4% FRL.)

Also, my kid's friend group is still close and international which is really cool.

I’m driving all over the county for play dates. Kinda jealous of my neighbors who only have to walk down the street. 😆

Probably outing myself here but I hate play dates south of 395. I can never seem to follow the spaghetti noodle directions correctly. Clearly, I didn't go to ATS.

Yes, can take pre-algebra in 6th. There are intensified classes in 6th. Can't answer the transition to WL question but my kid went to private, no homework middle school. very worried about WL transition. They are doing great! The first month was a home work culture shock though. BUt they are very self-motivated.

The answer is still no, not a chance.

I have also been told no intensified classes at HB. Is that wrong?

I just take Columbia Pike, Glebe or George Mason to basically everything, if you can find your way to one of those roads you are ok!

There are no intensified classes in middle school at H-B, but some of the classes are hard. My kid is doing a LOT of writing in sixth grade. Plus, they move quickly because there are 8 classes instead of 7. It's great they get more electives, but the faster pace makes it kind of intensified by default.

Mostly this – but there are the same intensified math classes at HB MS as at neighborhood schools. There aren’t intensified classes for the other core subjects.

Zero chance if you are in the 100s. You need to be under 20, and even then it isn’t a sure thing.

“Mom, can I go play at so-and-so’s house?”

“No. I don’t have 40 minutes to drive you there (20 min each way).”

Meanwhile, all the kids at the neighborhood school are all hanging out at the park together.

We played sports with our neighborhood kids and saw them at the park/pool. It just expanded his friend base.

That can work for boys who kinda of play with whomever is around especially for activity.

Works for families who have extra time/funds to do lots of extra activities. But say you’re back to working in the office till 5, but soccer is Tuesdays/Thursdays at 4:30? Kinda tough.
