School Opening Predictions for Tuesday?

2 hours delay

I think most posters are from Bethesda and TkPk and Chevy Chase.

Upper county conditions are probably going to warrant closure. This "storm" will create very different conditions in a SE to NW line, with the NW part of the county looking closer to the last early January storm and the SE corner looking more like last Saturday morning.

I’m in Gaithersburg on the edge of things. We alternated between sleet and clumpy slush before settling into fluffy snow right now. My road got plowed once and it’s now half pavement, half slush. When it freezes it’s going to be lumpy ice impossible to chip up. Hard freeze tomorrow = closed Wednesday I think.

Upper areas do seem to already be getting more. If no one is working to clear tomorrow, they'll need Tues to clean. Closed.

I work in a hospital - we’ve had quite a few broken bones from the ice. Open or closed - just bs careful, everyone!!

Get 50 other parents to do the same. Bring your kids to help or play while you clear. Enjoy hot chocolate. Get the same word to the next neighboring school parents before you go.

Enjoy schools being open on Tuesday when the MCPS effort can focus on making sure the busses start.

This would be great except at the Title 1 school where I teach, many kids are responsible for getting themselves up, dressed, and walking to school by themselves. We’ve given away more heavy winter jackets than I can count yet still have kids comping to school with light jackets or thin zip up hoodies. I’ve spent money buying hats and gloves for my students yet we still have many that go without. Most of the sidewalks are still icy with huge compacted snow mountains on the curbs and sometimes sidewalks. Not sure what the answer is but it’s not as simple as fixing a thermos of hot cocoa to have on the walk to school.

I wish MD didn’t take away the virtual option. At this rate they’re going to have to extend the school year. But, many (like me) will not be able to do that. Kid is already registered for sleepaway camp starting the Sunday after school ends.

It’s coming down hard and there was already ice.

We already had this discussion the last time it snowed. Your school's families can afford coats and gloves. I used to be poor - I would get great deals at Value Village. Yes, of course they're going to take advantage of free give-aways, but they really can buy this stuff, I promise. It's that the kids don't want to come to overheated classrooms with huge winter outerwear. My own kids don't want to either. We have ALL THE WINTER STUFF... at home. They wear it to go sledding.

Never spend your own money, PP.

What are you suggesting? Close schools until the ice on MCPS grounds melts (because MCPS took 3 days off when it could have been cleared)?

I'm fine with a delay when there are single digit temps but otherwise these kids are far better off in school.

The calendar should be one week longer

Most wealthy countries don't take 2 months off of school.

Our area is already a wet snowy freezing mess and supposed to get more heavy snow the next couple of hours followed by arctic blast. Not seeing how commuting will be safe by Tuesday.

You know how I know you haven't spent any time schools lately? Students are checked out by mid-May. Extending the school year would be absolutely pointless for both students and teachers.

Lol okay, in that case let's end the school year one month earlier and lower teacher salaries accordingly. Sounds like a huge waste to make teachers work an extra month.

I'm sure most would agree to that. Nothing worse than going to teach a bunch of apathetic students who have no interest in learning because their parents haven't fostered a love of learning at home from day one.
