Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass = DC Mayor Muriel Bowser

The guy who ran against her protected the large outdoor mall in Pacific Palisades, so that’s one guy who ran against her and showed us how to do it properly.

Being able to run a city, and being able to win elections are almost contradictory skill sets. It should come as no surprise that DC's best "elected" mayor was essentially hand-picked for the job.

DC hasn’t had a decent mayor since Marion Barry.

You on crack?!

sports teams = funding for schools and 911

Um not when said sports teams are getting exceptions for real estate taxes, interest tax, deed/recording and transfer taxes. DC Tax payers are covering billionaires for all of these costs AND footing the half a billion dollar bill for the arena upfront.

No wonder some of you think she is a great leader. You're getting robbed blind and praising her for the privilege

Remind me how Nats Park was bad for DC? It totally built up a complete disaster of an area in the last 15+ years. Do you not think those new apartments, office parks, condos, restaurants, generate tax revenue versus the slums that it once was?

You would rather DC lose Cap One Arena and not attract the Commanders? These are massive economic wins and really help diversify DC's economy. You need to invest to create economies. Hist

This is a tax I would be happy to pay. At least I will get something out of it.

Agree too that the only connection to Bowser I see is race and gender.

The Ghana trip is clearly a junket and not something a mayor should be doing at any point. It shows that being mayor isn't really her focus and her ambition is elsewhere. Much like Bowser, who seems to be phoning it in until a better opportunity presents itself.

Stop the presses! This guy figured out how the fires could have been prevented. It all wouldn't have happened if the mayor hadn't been on her trip to Ghana! Going forward, no more mayoral trips = no more wildfires!!! Genius!

DP. She's got time to go to Ghana but none to see that the water reservoir was empty and the fire hydrants didn't have proper water pressure. They knew about those issues for months.

The article said that it was under repair.

These opinions make normal people not want to run for public office. I don't know why anyone would do it.

Do you really know the difference between correlation and causation? Because your post reads like you don't.

I like how Navy Yard has developed. However, it's not hard to imagine that the same development - and maybe even a bit more - could have happened without Nats Park.

Plenty of parts of DC - Union Market, NoMa, The Wharf, H St and so forth - have managed to develop perfectly well without an accompanying stadium.

Likewise, next to no development accompanied the construction of FedEx Stadium in Landover, MD or many other neighborhoods across America where new stadiums have been built.

Public financing of and other giveaways for sports stadiums are a massive scam. There is a litany of evidence out there that shows this. It shouldn't take you long to find it if you are interested in the topic.

Actually, OP's idea seems to be that all black women who hold political power are the same person, who should not be allowed to hold political power.

This same line of thought seems to hold that black women are in power because of their race and gender, whereas white men in power are simply inherently superior and did not get there due to race and gender. It's so simplistic and ignorant that it's almost not worth responding to. And yet, our hard-wired prejudices make some people believe this swill.

You are 100% correct here but the flip side of your argument is that you and others seem to be unwilling to admit when there are glaring gaps in leadership from these same women.

No, I'm all about criticizing people regardless of their skin color and gender, but the reality is that for generations, many white men have been put in power largely because they fit the mold of who we think should have power. I do not think that we should shield anyone from criticism simply because of a demographic characteristic, but I just don't see any similarity between Bowser and Bass.

Why are you referring to white men then? The two people in question are black women. I won't speak for OP but the sentiment seems to be poor management and being in over their heads in their positions as the common dominators.

Yeah and they knew about the reservoir needing repair for months before the fire started. Poor management.

Well yes... That's what was written. That is the common denominator. The commonly discussed mayor of DC ( the namesake town of this website) compared to the mayor of where a major event is happening is not some racist conspiracy theory.

You are making hypotheticals. You also have no idea if Nats park was the sole driver of growth there..which it was. Union Market is a craphole, the Wharf is fantastic right on the water which was an easy win for developers (who also received tax benefits), H Street is really nothing special.

Obviously there wasn't development near LANDOVER because it's a far out no nothing town near zero public transit besides a metro over a mile away.

Look at the major cities, the areas surrounding urban stadiums are key economic drivers. I have been to every MLB stadium and the ones in the city core have fantastic amenities, night life, new development, etc. The ones in the suburbs are horrid.

The anti sports crowd is very bizarre and clearly in the minority.

DC would be a wasteland with zero sports teams in DC proper.

You should look up the definition of these words. You are making up things that aren't supported anywhere in the OP. It's a strange thing to double down on.

This is actually hilarious. You can stand in the neighborhoods surrounding Nats park and it looks like a developing country.
