Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass = DC Mayor Muriel Bowser

For example: 911 has been awful under Bowser.
Just watching the news and seeing how Bass is taking criticism, I think Bowser is going to get her come-comeuppance soon.

I don’t think so. She didn’t make it to 3 terms by accident. You can hate her or love her, but I think people underestimate how many people in the city really support her, and would readily vote her into a 4th term.

Marion Barry also served 4 terms. Re-election really isn't the greatest metric to measure success of the city.

What does this say about her critical thinking skills and her notions about what a leader should do at grave times. The first thing you do is show up, not leave town. She yeah, she blew it and it left her open for criticism, a distraction no one needs.

So Bass caused all the fires?

Exactly, and didn’t Bass come back to Los Angeles early?

The question is, why did she leave in the first place, after vowing in her campaign to not travel internationally? There is a particularly dangerous red flag warning for fire, and she leaves on a political junket to Ghana during that.

Her deer-in-headlights press conference was crazy. Bowser would NEVER.

not really understanding the comparison. being mayor of dc seems like the easiest job in the world. it's like governing on easy mode. don't have enough money? no problem. you can raise taxes every single year and no one will say boo. crime is terrible? oh well. that's the big city for you. no matter how bad you are as mayor, no one who isn't a crazy person will bother running against you. bowser is a like a substitute teacher the school forgot to replace.

That's because Bowser would never have to deal with an actual disaster. She'd be yanked out of leadership early for someone competent to take over. As long as her governing only impacts DC residents, no one cares.

There can be a dozen red flag warnings every year in LA. If your expectation is that the mayor will never travel during red flag warnings (which basically means they'll never be able to plan any trips because it's not as though you can predict red flag warnings weeks or months in advance), then no one will ever want to be mayor.

To get to anywhere internationally from CA other than Mexico and South America or Canada, you're crossing an ocean.

Ghana is almost a 12 hour direct flight from DC. Who knows how long her flight took to get back to CA, assuming she was in Accra or somewhere where she could easily get on a flight back on short notice.

She also made the promise not to travel internationally for a good reason. She should have kept her promise.

OK so she broke a campaign promise -- lots of politicians do. You dodged my question: is the standard going forward that a mayor can never leave town during a red flag warning (including canceling any travel that they may have planned long ago)?
