Nanny knowingly spread germs to my child

However your description that she “knowingly spread germs” is so dramatic and makes it sound like a malicious act that I can’t take your account seriously.

Agree. I’m not sure she “knowingly spread germs”. Did she?

Not everyone has good hygiene. I regularly hear my (mostly indian) colleagues at the office talking on their mobiles while they are in the toilet stalls!! Then they just leave the restroom with no hand washing. I conclude that it must be a cultural thing because there are so many that do it - it could be linked to education. I too am Latina and my mom was completely germaphobic, so we were raised nearly OCD about hygiene, but I see lots of Latinos and non-Latino white people (I’m white too) with poor hygiene.

I don’t think you sound like a nut considering g you just want her to follow basic hygiene rules that even 4 year olds know. The worst is that she lied. I’d question what else she does when no one is watching.
For what it’s worth, we’ve had good luck w/ both White House Nannies and care.com. You could always fire her and use White House nannies for temporary help while job search.

Someone who is preparing food for small children yet doesn’t wash hands is a deal breaker.

The problem is no one in the family is doing this crap except her.

I have a family and would never do that.

You get what you pay for.

A lot of these nannies come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These are (frankly) people who grew up with primitive living conditions. They are not folks from middle class backgrounds who know better. Hygiene is a big deal for educated, well off folks, but not necessarily a priority or an understood thing in other cultures or regions, including the U.S.

If you need someone who follows your cultural expectations, hire someone who is familiar with your expectations. That's not necessarily the poor immigrant from a simpler lifestyle.
Op here, Ok clearly you’re racist. Poverty or being an immigrant doesn’t mean a person lacks basic hygiene. In fact, in college I became aware that plenty of the suburban raised pretty white girls, that took an +1hr getting done up, were the grossest bunch. Take your hate somewhere else.
Is that because you hung around outside the bathroom listening to them poop, too? You sound like a pervert.
OP here, I’m replying to someone else stating that poor people/immigrants lack basic hygiene. Why don’t you ask them how they know that? Seems like we’re very sure of themselves.
As for my experience, have you ever lived in a dorm or apt. where people share bathrooms and kitchens? It’s obvious who is gross when you are living in a shared space. Maybe you were lucky enough to have never had that experience.
You said in your OP that you deliberately stand outside the bathroom door listening to your nanny. That is extremely disturbing behavior. And it’s also extremely gross.
If the hired help drank from the family used bottle I would also stand outside the bathroom once or twice to hear whether they washed their hands. These basic common sense habits are deal breakers to me if not done.

OP sounds like a nightmare. You are mad because she drinks your cokes and makes fresh coffee? Have you considered she just goes into the bathroom to get a quick break, but since you stalk her she just flushes the toilet to make noise?

Umm OP said the nanny drank from the communal orange juice bottle. That’s nasty.

I would never consider that a person would go into the bathroom “to get a quick break” and then flush to make noise. I’ve never done that personally and never heard of anyone doing that. Is that something you do, PP?!? It sounds gross and weird. Like, what, you go into the bathroom and scroll your phone?!

Oh hell no you. She is gone. I would not continue have her. I mean that seriously - it shows disregard for the well being of your children. Give her two weeks, send her home, take off work and find someone new.

Sorry my typos in the previous message. She is needs to go. Being poor and from economically disadvantaged doesn't mean dirty and disregarding. Done. And do so with no guilt.

She will be modeling poor toilet hygiene to kids as well as just being gross.
Get new nanny.

Is this a sackable offense or a trainable offense? I think this is a trainable offense. Good employees are really hard to find - both technical and non technical employees. I invest in training. that me and I am not in the habit of firing them at minor infractions. Yes, I would be pissed, but I would approach her with kindness and empathy. I would use this as an opportunity to to teach her proper hygiene - bathroom, kitchen, cooking, etc. Honestly, she is low skilled, likely low education, etc - she really might not know. When you teach her tell her this is expected of her EVERY TIME. If the behavior continues or if she’s resistant to training, then consider a replacement. Do unto others. . . If she were one of your kids how would you want her to be treated by an employer?

This isn't training, it's disregard. She lied. She knows what the right thing to do is. And she lied about her actions.

Even if she wasn’t sick, she will contaminate the OJ because of the sugar.

Oh dear, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but at least half of the people you interact with in your day to day life scroll their phones while they poop. They might wash their hands but they almost certainly don’t disinfect their phones regularly.

I’ve actually found that childcare workers tend to be a little on the squeamish side for me, as far as freaking out about bugs and such. So I would be happy to have found a relaxed one.

I’m all for good hygiene but only as an evidence-based best practice.

For some reason culturally, hygiene often comes hand in hand with a lot of fear mongering, shaming and general freaking out that I definitely don’t want my kid to get. I would prefer the juice bottle germs.

Unless she’s otherwise an amazing nanny that your children love, I would terminate her once you find a replacement, because these are little details that you will keep thinking about, knowing that old habits die hard.
