This.
If she had a cold; and was caring for your kids all day, unless she was wearing a well fitted medical mask all day she was giving them her cold regardless. But, not washing hands after using the bathroom would be a deal breaker for me.

If she’s a good nanny this is a psychotic thing to fire her for, at least not without giving her a chance to understand your concern and change her habits. Kids get germs from everywhere - you cannot keep them in a bubble, nor would that be healthy.

Are you also a nanny doing despicable, underhanded shit to her charges and employers?

OP, this would be enough for me to fire her. I would have maybe given her a chance if she was super apologetic and promised to never do it again but the lying is a huge tell. You can find better than this nanny.

You shouldn't be giving your kids juice anyway.

Way to miss the point. Newsflash, she is probably drinking milk this way too.

You get what you pay for.

A lot of these nannies come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. These are (frankly) people who grew up with primitive living conditions. They are not folks from middle class backgrounds who know better. Hygiene is a big deal for educated, well off folks, but not necessarily a priority or an understood thing in other cultures or regions, including the U.S.

If you need someone who follows your cultural expectations, hire someone who is familiar with your expectations. That's not necessarily the poor immigrant from a simpler lifestyle.

Fire her right now that's what I would do.

Op here, Ok clearly you’re racist. Poverty or being an immigrant doesn’t mean a person lacks basic hygiene. In fact, in college I became aware that plenty of the suburban raised pretty white girls, that took an +1hr getting done up, were the grossest bunch. Take your hate somewhere else.

That’s not necessarily true. My kids are too young to mask, and our nanny doesn’t always catch their colds. Drinking directly from the family’s OJ bottle was an additional exposure that was absolutely unnecessary. Pouring OJ into a glass is far less onerous than wearing a mask all day.

OP, I do think your nanny’s behavior is gross, especially the lack of handwashing. But she probably lied about thinking it was her bottle of OJ because she was embarrassed. She sounds young. If she is, I would explain your hygiene expectations and ask if she can abide by them. If she says yes, I would give her another chance. She may have not been taught this stuff at home. As you noted, lots of people go off to college with a lack of basic hygiene.

But taking care of kids is menial, low-skilled work that middle and upper class folks are far too good for. Why should OP have to pay decent money for someone educated and responsible to do this extremely simple and unimportant job?

This. They’re small children and she’s in close contact with them. Unless you have her wear a mask continuously, she was exposing them either way.

However, she is gross, rude, and possibly uneducated about basic hygiene.

Is that because you hung around outside the bathroom listening to them poop, too? You sound like a pervert.

Is she undocumented? Threaten to deport her.
