You are overlooking the financial aspect. Florida, has inexpensive college costs for in-state students and on top of that offers Bright Futures scholarships for top students. That makes it very financially attractive for a critical mass of top students to stay in state. It’s lovely if you can afford options that are out of state but not every family is in the same situation.

Regarding UMD stats, you really have to look at your kid’s high school Naviance/SCOIR etc and they have to talk to their high school college counselor.

+1 and many of the high stats students who get into UMD but choose to go elsewhere are from wealthier families who can afford oos or private.

I know several UMC families, 2 feds, whose high stats kids go to UMD. Some even went to MCPS magnets. The ones I know who went to elite privates either have a lot of family money (and some have legacy), or they are lower income and are getting a full ride.

Lots of high stats kids from donut hole families go to UMD.

Yep Maryland is the richest state in the country and has always been a private school state. Baltimore, DC (Marylands little embedded and donated baby) and the Md DC suburbs are loaded with amazing privates. The kids often go private for college. UMD is highly desirable these days and the only Big Ten style school from Pennsylvania to Florida and west to Ohio. Private kids are often not STEM oriented and go private. The Maryland area higher education community concentrated in a 30 mile radius which contains Georgetown, UMD, Annapolis and Hopkins is the best concentrated area outside Massachusetts.

You wish MD had worse K-12 education and family wealth, so that students don't have opportunities to go to better colleges?

Wow.

45% admitted, 21% yield. as undesirable as ever. Does any other state flapship have such bad yield?

UMD’s yield is a very strong 50% for in state applicants.

Waaaaaay higher for CS. I know some with 1500 SAT get rejected for CS.

Not way higher. Just more random.

No, it's way higher. They halved the program last year. They will now only admit 100 transfers from both internal and external, and 600 direct admit.

Two years ago, they admitted a lot more so it was a bit more random. Now they are culling the program of weak students. My DC is a junior taking high level CS classes (and math), and the weaker students are struggling big time. UMD wouldn't want to put their rep on the line by admitted students who can't keep up.

UMD INCREASED the number of direct admits from 450 to 600.
Nearly eliminating transfers has nothing to do with firstyear admissions standards.

UMD admits major blind. Once they have been admitted, the student is then considered for limited enrollment majors. Direct admits to CS is overall likely 10-20% of the overall applicant pool who indicate CS as their major, based on the info the AO provided at the CS open house. Unfortunately none of the admissions stats by major is published.

Thoughts on FCPS kids getting in? Easier or harder than in state?

My FCPS (non-TJ) was directly admitted to CS with $10k/yr merit and Honors college in 2023. Great stats like most CS applicants but do think they like those OOS tuition $$. He loves it there.

UMD is my Moco kids first choice and if admitted he will most likely choose it over some OOS and privates with merit that bring the cost pretty close to UMD -low $30ks.

As a parent I am torn. On the one hand, I used to recruit at the Business school and the kids were bright, polished and prepared. On the other hand I'm getting MCPS burnout as a parent and pretty disappointed that UMD created a special position for Monifa after she got her $1M severance for failing at her job. The recent revelation of the president's plagiarism scandal is a bummer too. Our plan has always been to encourage UMD for our kids but I wish I liked more than the price.

It’s an interesting situation where they admit the highest scorers who rarely want to go there and generally have much better options. Then they deny those right below (4.0 students with 5 AP’s for example) who would actually attend. I wish there was ED to show demonstrated interest.

Wow that really is unfair to admit the most qualified students and let them decide if they want to attend or not. Craziness!

Va tech and University of Washington yield also 25%

There probably is an ED. That’s how I got in years ago though

UMD has no MCPS connection. It’s exceeding all expectations for my student.

It seems the connection is that both MCPS and UMD place a high value on Monifa which is suspect.

I would be curious what college your kid is applying to and if you’ve done your due diligence to make sure no one that works there or attended there has done something you disapprove of either before, during, or after attending/working there. If that’s the yardstick just be aware that will rule out a lot of schools.

That is how leadership works. Why would you want to join a community with a track record of bad leadership?

If your kid wants to do CS, general admission isn't the relevant admission.
