We are not going to war in Syria. We pulled out of Afghanistan. We don't need oil anymore for one thing. What is our interest there?

Failed State with a lot of refugees and preventing resurgence like ISIS will be our interest.

Does the country have the appetite to get involved in a war in Syria?

No, which is why this offensive was timed to happen before Trump could take office. The letter agencies had to get this rolling before he could stop them. Trump was unlikely to start any new wars, so they are gifting him this one to deal with.

The timing might be more to do with Iran being busy with Israel and Russia with Ukraine more than Trump.

And with Erdogan taking advantage of that. The MAGAs need to do more reading

This is very bad for the Israelis. I am surprised they have not invaded and crushed the rebels forces. At least make some air strikes on the rebels? Like you say it is a golden opportunity for the Israelis take some territory though the IDF suffered a lot of casualties in Lebanon.

Why? Given Iran is on Assad's side right now, Israel is probably funding the rebels.

Iran is out. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/06/world/middleeast/iran-syria-evacuation.html?smtyp=cur&smid=tw-nytimes

Russia is out. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2024/12/06/russians-in-syria-urged-to-leave-country-a87254

Assad is done.

Seems so. Erdogan didn’t mince his words today either. I’m not quite sure what Turkey’s beef is with him, but they sure want him gone. I thought the Kurds were anti-Assad too.

Assad, like Saddam, is not Islamic.

We're already at war in Syria and have been since the Obama administration. We have literal bases on Syrian sovereign soil, and run combat missions out of them.

Russia has been tied up in Ukraine for years now, and Iran is as tied down now as they were 6 months ago. They rolled this out within a month of Trump winning. That's not a coincidence.

It's fascinating to see all the repercussions of 10/7. That massacre led to the destruction of Hamas and Hezbollah. And now that there aren't any Hezbollah fighters left to shore up the Assad regime, Syria is collapsing. Russia is getting out of Dodge. Their airfield in Syria is indefensible. Their navy has left. This is a huge loss for Russia since Syria was their only base in the Mediterranean. Iran has lost everything - Hamas is gone. Hezbollah is gone. And shortly Assad and Syria will be gone as Iranian and Russian allies.

I still marvel at the stupidity of Palestinians in Gaza and their decision to invade Israel. It set so many things in motion. Most importantly, it ultimately really weakened Russia and Iran. Russia is losing their access to the Mediterranean. Iran can no longer deliver arms to their proxy armies. All of this is great.

And the US didn't have to lift a finger. Because Hamas invaded Israel and set the stage for what's happening today. A win for America.

Yup. Self-destructive behavior to a remarkable and consistent extent over the years. It brings to mind the popular definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results.

Like how Trump is trying to double down on a bunch of things that were failures in his first term. Didn't learn anything and possibly insane.

Yet the U.S. is still here, and will still be here four years from now, just like Israel will be.

Fortunately the Democrats and a small handful of Republicans had the spine to stand up to Trump and not let him destroy America.

Yeah, I don’t care if Israel is here or not. Israel and the people who care about its existence are owed NOTHING by others.

America’s relevance and sustainability has zero to do with that shitbox in the desert, which has proven over and over again to be a net negative for America.

So let’s be clear: America is a priority. Israel is irrelevant.
