Can we get a district wide residency check of all FCPS high schools?

There's a student in my DC's grade who went to all of ES and now MS completely out of her zone (think Reston instead of Herndon), then they'll go on to the HS where Mom teaches. How has this kid been in a completely different FCPS Region for seven years? Five more to go, and she's been preceded by an older sibling.

This should be allowed as a benefit for teachers.

We need teachers and allowing their kids to attend their school is a small accomodation that benefits far more people than it harms.

+1 we already have a teacher retention problem. Let's not make it harder on them.

I don't have an issue with the kid going to the school where Mom/Dad teaches. But the other years, kid should be at base school and not in any school the parent chooses.

They don't allow any school the teacher-parent choses; it has to be within the same pyramid and the closest school to where the teacher teaches. So, for a high school teacher, it would be the closest elementary school to their high school.

Honestly- what we really need to do is allow teachers who live out of county enroll their kids in the same school. With snow days and incongruent holidays, it would be an easy solution for subs and such.

FFX is so expensive but I do think teachers would flock here to do this.

As for fraud audit:

As the tuition is $19,000, all we really need to do is send out a letter to student announcing a fraud audit and allowing parents a grace period to remove their kids from the schools immediately if they are cheating the system. If the kids are still enrolled and fraud from previous years are found (omitting Covid of course), the parents would owe back tuition.

We should be checking W-2s, pay stubs, car registrations and working with the county tax department to recoup funds. We should also be doing background checks for families that don’t own their homes here but own in different counties and “rent” here from “friends.”

And honestly- I really don’t care if it’s athletes or immigrants. But if we get 1000 kids with committing fraud, that’s 1% of fraud costing us an additional $12 million in money that could be used for teacher salaries. So I would rather force these families out now and see where we are.

How about a full residency check of all students at all schools? They can't claim to have overcrowded schools until they first verify that all the students attending those schools actually should be.

Or a copy of the personal property tax due in October which asks you to verify that your vehicle is still at your address. We are zoned for a high ranked school and residency fraud has historically been a big problem.

That will not work for someone who rent a room in a house zone for McLean so that their kids can attend McLean HS.

They can knock on doors if needed.

Who are “they”

They can knock on doors all they want. I will not answer any questions unless it is ordered by the court.

Great! Your kid will be disenrolled.

Interesting that this isn’t the case, but whatever. Agree a residency clean-up is due.

The number of kids going to a different school because their parent teaches there (or nearby) is pretty negligible, I would imagine. Also, those kids are already in the system as being at a different school and have been approved for that.

Better to focus this on kids who are going to a different school than where they are zoned for that no one knows about.

NP and you will always have people who cheat the system. If they actually have a legit lease then it will be more difficult. Right now there are no residency checks after initial registration. Does any other school district do that?

For me, it’s all or nothing. Too many loopholes and caveats is how we’ve gotten here.

+5- me, my husband and kids

APS requires parents of kids who are going to the next level (5th grade and 8th grade) at least to resubmit all residency documents. While it isn’t every year, it would definitely weed out some kids.

You will likely find zero support for not allowing teachers to pupil place their own children into their school pyramid.

Our teachers are undetpaid as it it.

Teachers pupil placing their children is an easy benefit that keeps good teachers and costs FCPS next to nothing.

It is the smartest benefit cost vs return that FCPS can offer its teachers.

This benefit is only for teachers who reside in Fairfax County, so arguably, it costs nothing.

Absolutely. Can't believe that anybody would advocate for not allowing teachers to do this.
