Why aren’t males attending college?

Anonymous
There are lower expectations of males. Some do go to college but the rigor is hard for them to tackle.

DS did his degree in microbiology. Hasn’t found a job in his field even though he applied to 100’s of positions.
The same is true with his classmates. There are those who went to grad school. The others are working minimum wage jobs that don’t require any degree.
DS is now attending a trade school to make decent money.

How is this possible? Is he trying to get a job in remote Alaska? There are so many unfilled jobs out there.

There aren't that many open jobs in the sciences, especially for white and Asian males who have to stand behind less qualified women and DEI hires when applying.

None of these work for him?

Sorry forgot to click entry level. These are full time jobs paying over 50k in the DC area requiring a bachelor's in his field.

How come? Can you name any non-college careers open to men but closed to women?

Yes construction

Folks need to do their research on the job market for hard sciences graduates. It’s never been good…Biology, Microbiology, etc. jobs with just a BS have always been low paying.

My SO’s brother biology major was barely earning more than federal minimum wage back in the 1990s…assume it isn’t much different today.

Not all STEM is the same.

I don’t think that’s true…not the same, but we had to call out Washington Gas to do some work and both technicians were women.

It starts with teachers not understanding child development and requiring executive functioning and fine motor skills more advanced than many students can handle, but that disproportionately affects the boys. Then, there’s favoritism in HS for the girls. And disenfranchising in HS, with such a large focus on the writing and thinking of non white males (looking at you, MCPS). Our DS is smart and privileged enough to be fine, but we know it will be an uphill battle for him to get internships and job offers. And we are struggling to keep him from edging too close to the young angry white MAGA views.

Odd because still top positions are run by men.

My son attends a college of 60% female vs. 40% males.

Exactly. Don’t major in neuroscience, bio-engineering, environmental studies, or sociology. There are very few well-paying jobs in these fields. Study something that will pay the bills.

They are slacking off, playing video games, getting disaffected, not going to college, and voting for Trump. Your sons suck. Face it.

This.

Also the college board revamping the scoring to significantly favor woman by weighting the language portion double compared to the math portion.

This was done explicity to create this result, to increase the number of women in collge above the number of men in college.

What does this mean exactly?

They want to be a stay at home parent like you. Your daughter can support them.

Successful smart, college educated, good career men have even more women to choose from since they are a shrinking minority.

Yes - this is absolutely true. But, what this trend really means is many successful women are stuck with a sea of duds that expect them to be moms to them, as well as the kids, AND bring home the money. It's sad that it has come to this. Long ago, public education in particular abandoned our sons.

It's why infidelity is increasing too. Limited supply of white-collar, educated men. Mate stealing.

The college board changed scoring a while back from weighing math and verbal equally, to weighing verbal as 2/3 of the SAT score.

This was done to explicity close the gender gap in SAT scores, ie elevate young women over young men.

Prior to this, when math and verbal were weighted 50/50, young men significantly overperformed young women on the SAT. (As a group, not necessarily individually)

This change would have affected young men applying to college over the past decade or so.
