Boys are hammered with negativity the moment they step on campus, especially cisgender white males: https://thefederalist.com/2019/08/14/sons-freshman-orientation-virginia-tech-full-leftist-propaganda/ When you are treated that way at most universities, isn’t it logical for boys not to go where they are clearly not welcomed and constantly criticized? |

I mean, I don’t think women or people of color were treated very nicely when they were first allowed to enter colleges, but they persisted and flourished. A lot of men just aren’t used to getting their feelings hurt or having their assumptions challenged. |
Public schools get a failing grade not even close to passing. |
Translation: historical campus-sexism and racism justifies current-day discrimination against cisgender white males? Seriously, PP ? You do realize you are condoning racism and sexism on campus right? |
+1 stop excusing their wussy behavior. -signed mom of college aged boy and HS girl. I went to a no name C rated public and worked my way through back in the early 90s. I come from a culture where women weren't expected to go to college, but get married by 23. Even my parents discouraged me from going to college, but I did it. I ended up making six figures by 30 back in 2000. It was tough, but I didn't let my parents or cultural expectations to push me down. And it's BS that men are not welcomed in college. Some men just don't like that academia recognizes that women were discouraged and even prevented from getting higher education for hundreds of years. Conservatives still think women should stay at home and raise the kids. This is how women have been treated for hundreds of years. |
No one here condones racism or sexism. PP just pointed out that historically women and minorities were literally prevented from getting a degree, yet they have flourished. Men are not prevented from attending college like women were, but some men are whiney about too much DEI in colleges? Stop being a wus. |
Fake news. |
The post immediately above yours literally condones sexism. Read it again: she’s justifying holding men back, as payback. She is not suggesting equality. Re-read the thread-title. Why would men bother going to college when people like the PP openly intend to discriminate against them ? |
That was my post and I condone no such thing. Where do I say I want to hold men back? I have a teenage son and daughter. I don’t want to hold anyone back. It’s not a zero sum game. There’s room for everyone at the table, but they have to learn to work together and not assume dominance. That’s compromise, not discrimination. |
I have no reason to believe men’s issues aren’t entirely a behavioral problem. If you can’t sit still and do problems- you won’t be able to advance much in college or in a career requiring a collegiate degree. For young boys, could we increase recess a little without digging into instructional time? Potentially, but you also need to be disciplined- which is what school helps teach you.
I’ve seen every excuse in the book about men’s “decline” but in reality it’s a complete stagnancy resulting from a culture that infantalizes men and their choices. So many dads lazily telling their sons that college is a scam or being fully absent from their sons lives, and now we’re all surprised that men aren’t doing well? |
Both my sons are currently in college and there are other males there too. |
This is why boys need to be redshirted! |
Huh, this is sounding like affirmative action for males. I thought we hated affirmative action? I’m of the idea that things should be merit based. If a school is 60% women, 40% men then those girls got there on pure merit! Men should just study harder. Khan Academy is free. |
Literally irrelevant to the point about statistics. |
