8% of mechanical engineers in industry are woman. 16% of mechanical engineering majors in 2022 were women. In my DD’s school 10% are women. There are plenty of spots for boys, 90% of them. |
Yes, they are and you know what makes a diffrence parenting. |

Wait, your boys are typical? Then why you here bragging sis? |
In other words, you do not. Reread the question. See the part about “widely the case at the college level”? This is closer to reality: https://womenineecs.mit.edu/ |
No, he has applied to jobs in DC proper, MD and Virginia. He got just a few phone calls back but no interviews. He even paid hundreds of dollars to get his resume rewritten by a so called specialist. It seems the advertised jobs are reserved for family and friends. |
We sent DS to private school- small class sizes, high expectations, and a competitive cohort, all with an eye toward college and families who back that goal. It was expensive, we're not rich by most standards, but a good investment. I don't trust the public schools to educate my son and hold him to high standards--and I think it takes a village. Parents can't do everything by themselves.
My DS has ADHD, is pretty much impervious to any threats of punishment, and doesn't respond well to authority- with a headstrong personality, we could only control the environment. |

Is the issue that men are applying to college and being rejected in favor of women?
Or that men are choosing to skip college in higher numbers resulting in fewer men in the applicant pool and thus fewer men in college? Also, to answer this question you have to look outside the "top" schools -- most kids don't go to top schools. Saying "oh it's too hard for boys and the way they develop to get the perfect grades and ECs you need to get into Harvard so they just aren't going" makes no sense because it's hard for girls to get those things too and girls are still choosing to go to college in very high numbers. What is the gender breakdown at less competitive state schools? Community colleges? |
Some of the responses on this thread are crazy!!! “Oh these poor men”?
The reason they are not going is because college has gotten so expensive and they don’t have to go. White men have more options for job and don’t need the credentials women or URM need to be able to get a decent job. https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/ |
The average man can get a lot farther than the average women without going to college.
There are A lot of high paying careers and trades attracting more Men that don’t even require a college degree. The non-college careers and trades that attract more women pays lot less. |
They absolutely are. Look on the previous page. Referencing the "less qualified " "low stats" poster. Their allegations are ridiculous and false. But, this just betrays the attitude that women are somehow less than and encouraging their involvement is somehow denying boys and ability to go to college. This is nuts. |
How come? Can you name any non-college careers open to men but closed to women? |
