Every college girl I know calls her mom daily.

Freshman DD and I speak when she has time -- but it's definitely not every day. Probably twice a week, depending on what's going on. I wait for her to call me, but we do text almost every day. She's got 5 classes that are 18 credits because of all the outside work required. Plus 4 hours a week of lab and 10 hours a week of rehearsals (Tech theatre major). We are extremely close, but she's always been extremely busy!

That seems normal! My daughter calls on her long walks around campus with her headphones in. I love it.

Seriously. She sounds like a parent who thinks the world revolves around her child. Since her child needs a phone call then every college child today needs a phone call.

College students are in a way too connected. I went to college 8hours a way from home and calls were infrequent. At most once a week but it was long distance so sometimes it was once a month. Now with cell phones parents are constantly texting.

Frankly, it’s my job as a parent to put my kids first. My life does revolve around them, and I’m very proud of that. I think it’s a high compliment.
I’m sorry you had a distant relationship with your family, and I understand it’s hard to watch and compare. I know you will find friends who can support you. Don’t begrudge people who have a healthy family relationship.
Yes, call your college student and check in.

It sounds like you have a wonderful relationship with your child which comes from years of hard work and being present. Congratulations on raising a well adjusted adult

Thank you so much. I appreciate it. I didn't have good parents so tried to be a very good one myself.

I always found my dad to be the one I could go to with anything and up until he died he was often the first call. I’m glad to be that for my kid too. I was really close with my dad. He also could take the worst news and make a joke or say something funny that would lighten my load.

Aw, that's so sweet you carried on what your dad gave you. I love this post.

Yeah I can’t imagine calling my parents over something like this, but I can totally see my own kid doing this.

Modern kids are so much closer to their parents and really rely on them for support. I wonder if it’s because their peers are much less helpful than our peers were? I could go to my friends for anything. Parents? Not so much.

You're humblebragging that you're a better parent than your parents were

Or perhaps your child's college life is more similar to your college life than your life was to your parents' life.

We talk once a week on Sunday when DD is doing laundry. Maybe 20-30 minutes. But also have a joke/meme text thread with the entire family.
