I actually agree with you OP though no idea if you are genuine or just stirring the pot. Although an apology would be mostly symbolic, it could be a way to open up better communications and respect for ingenious people’s through central and South America .

The devastation done to indigenous peoples of Central and South America during Spanish colonization is on the scale of the Holocaust. People who belong to the once proud cultures of Aztecs/ Maya and Incas (among others) continue to face great discrimination and hardships even today.

“It is estimated that during the initial Spanish conquest of the Americas up to eight million indigenous people died, primarily through the spread of Afro-Eurasian diseases, in a series of events that have been described as the first large-scale act of genocide of the modern era.”.

We could learn a lot from indigenous peoples - such as treating nature with more respect.

As a mestizo, I am cringing as American wokeism is exported to Mexico. The Aztec empire was the most brutal, violent regime the world has ever seen. It is not even close. Ironic that people miss genocide committed by the Aztecs and skip right to Spaniard genocide. There is a reason why 40 conquistadores were able to topple the Aztec empire: the other nations helped the Spaniards because of how hated and genocidal the Aztecs were.

Scholars don’t agree on this version of the Aztecs and historians believe the Spanish exploited the situation with divide and rule tactics.

Can't tell if this is a sincere post from a woke ideologue or a troll just trying to make "the left" look ridiculous?

So Cortes showed up on the Mexican shores with 500 white and brown-skinned Europeans and used divide and conquer strategies to split apart nations that had been at war for centuries and toppled the most violent one of all with 200,000 natives fighting on his side against the Aztec empire?

Come on. Indigenous people had agency. Or is it in your telling that the little natives were so unsophisticated that 500 men overpowered the will of a force that numbered in the hundreds of thousands?

This is just US American-centric understanding of history. The brown people south of the border don’t need American colonial revisionist history.

You're halfway there. The people north of the border don't need American colonial revisionist history either.

He lost me at “wokist thought” This bogeyman incoherent battle cry for fighting the nonexistent philosophy of wokism.

Nobody said that the Aztecs were angels but they did not commit mass genocide of 8 million indigenous people. Their human
Sacrifices were horrible but limited and targeted for religious and political purposes. They had a sophisticated society comprising education, math, astronomy, art, agriculture and bureaucracy, prior to Spanish colonialism. 92% of their population was killed during the Spanish conquest. Their proud history and accomplishments were greatly denigrated as far worse than they actually were in order to justify mass killings and enslavement.

I would be interested to know what the Mexican president had in mind for any apology.

I would hope that the purpose of an apology would be to humanize people who were either killed or enslaved en masse.

DP. There was no genocide. The Spanish conquest was almost entirely accidental and unintentional, caused by the spread of disease. At the time of the arrival of the Spanish, famine also was widespread.

If you want to be an Aztec apologist, have fun with that. But try to stick to accuracy.

You can’t be serious? The Aztecs were conquerors themselves! They literally enslaved conquered peoples, took some for human sacrifice and demanded tribute payments from conquered peoples. They expanded their empire to cover all of central Mexico and controlling hundreds of smaller states and millions of people in the process.

There was no divide and conquer. The Aztecs were hated and other nations turned to Cortes because of their hatred for the Aztecs. You’re forcing an American narrative into a completely different society.

Yes, the Aztecs were sophisticated with trade and culture and lots of things that are admirable, but it doesn’t change the violence and brutality of that culture.

OP is not genuine and you really believe that Aztecs/Mayas were peaceful? Are you in 1st grade?

That is fair as it was largely not an intentional genocide. Nonetheless the Spanish conquest took more than 9 out of every 10 Aztec peoples.

I don’t know about you but if I even accidentally killed someone, I would be profusely apologizing.

Various historians suggest that the Spanish collaborated with rival groups to conquer the Aztecs.

I db’t think either society was perfect Human sacrifices are so beyond my experience and world view, that it is hard to grasp. But I do think that indigenous peoples deserve much more respect than they generally get. Not because of noble savage type ideals but because they are human and flourished for far longer than our civilization has.

Yes, and Italy must apologize to every country that suffered under the Roman Empire and the same for every other historical transgression.

Sorry people, time to stop the oppressor and oppressed narrative. Live in the present and strive to make the future better.

Romans must apologize for their conquest of the Illyrians.

This +100.
Geez. If you are going to do that then Israel must apologize for all the Palestinians they displaced when they took over their land.

See bolded above.

Nonexistent? Is Mexico’s demand “nonexistent?”

What about the reasoning behind Mexico’s demand? Is that nonexistent too?

The only thing “nonexistent” here was Spain’s traditionally-granted invitation to the Mexican presidential inauguration in 2024.
