They had a sophisticated society comprising education, math, astronomy, art, agriculture and bureaucracy, prior to Spanish colonialism. 92% of their population was killed during the Spanish conquest. Their proud history and accomplishments were greatly denigrated as far worse than they actually were in order to justify mass killings and enslavement.

I would be interested to know what the Mexican president had in mind for any apology.

I would hope that the purpose of an apology would be to humanize people who were either killed or enslaved en masse.

DP.  There was no genocide.  The Spanish conquest was almost entirely accidental and unintentional, caused by the spread of disease.  At the time of the arrival of the Spanish, famine also was widespread.

If you want to be an Aztec apologist, have fun with that.  But try to stick to accuracy.  [/quote]
