Spain must apologize for colonizing Mexico

Anonymous
Pre-Colombian Mexico was a paradise of peace. Cortez killed it all.

And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on
Hate was just a legend
And war was never known

Demands for apologies from historical oppressors are generally performative and make no difference to the majority of people who have suffered from historical wrongs.

They are usually made by calculating politicians who are trying to earn kudos or garner popular support, but they are almost never followed through with any substantive policy or dollars spent to actually improve the position of those people on whose behalf the apology is demanded.

An incredible amount of energy and intellectual thought then goes into the whole apology issue which would be better directed to actually helping to alleviate the suffering that resulted from this oppression. But that’s usually in the too hard and too expensive basket.

Once the apology is made, the poor person living in the ramshackle home with no access to clean water or continuous electricity is still scrounging to support their family.

Spain: the time has come. Do the right thing. Apologize.

I actually agree with you OP though no idea if you are genuine or just stirring the pot. Although an apology would be mostly symbolic, it could be a way to open up better communications and respect for ingenious people’s through central and South America .

The devastation done to indigenous peoples of Central and South America during Spanish colonization is on the scale of the Holocaust. People who belong to the once proud cultures of Aztecs/ Maya and Incas (among others) continue to face great discrimination and hardships even today.

“It is estimated that during the initial Spanish conquest of the Americas up to eight million indigenous people died, primarily through the spread of Afro-Eurasian diseases, in a series of events that have been described as the first large-scale act of genocide of the modern era.”.

We could learn a lot from indigenous peoples - such as treating nature with more respect.

As a mestizo, I am cringing as American wokeism is exported to Mexico. The Aztec empire was the most brutal, violent regime the world has ever seen. It is not even close. Ironic that people miss genocide committed by the Aztecs and skip right to Spaniard genocide. There is a reason why 40 conquistadores were able to topple the Aztec empire: the other nations helped the Spaniards because of how hated and genocidal the Aztecs were.

Scholars don’t agree on this version of the Aztecs and historians believe the Spanish exploited the situation with divide and rule tactics.

"Divide and rule" is a euphemism for forming an alliance. It's the same thing except that labeling it that way removes the agency of everyone else.

Unless there are people alive today they are responsible, why should Spain apologize?

Funny how this is always the argument from white people who don't extend that same courtesy to other races/religion...

Why would Americans care if Spain apologizes to Mexico?

Haven't you seen the Jungle Cruise movie by Disney, with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt?

Disney apologized for the terrible behavior of The Conquistadors. There's no need for Spain to do it now.

This movie and scene from 1992 was very woke and apologetic. It's been a few decades, but would this movie be made today? Does your thread coincide with Columbus Day?

1492: Conquest of Paradise • Main Theme • Vangelis

Yes I have. That doesn't take away from the fact that the Hashemites revolted against the Ottomans for their own reasons.

If its merely performative, then why doesn't Spain just do it already and get it over with? Why is Spain making such a big deal out of it?
Anonymous
Yeah I don’t get spain; just say you’re sorry and all.
Anonymous
England should apologize to pretty much everybody then. Let’s get reparations from them too.

Sorry people, time to stop the oppressor and oppressed narrative. Live in the present and strive to make the future better.

This +100.
Geez. If you are going to do that then Israel must apologize for all the Palestinians they displaced when they took over their land.

And the Palestinians can apologize to the Jews they displaced via Arab imperialism, which replaced Roman imperialism that was responsible for the conquering of the Kingdom of Judea.

Why should the modern state of Spain apologise for something that happened centuries ago?

Why should anyone apologise for something they had nothing to do with?
