Most teachers are paid for 195 days. My husband is a government contractor. His pay, which is standard in the government contracting world, is for 2080 hours, which equals 260 days. 365/366 days in a year. 52 weeks in a year. 104 Saturdays and Sundays. 261 Mondays through Fridays. 261 Monday through Fridays. My DH is getting paid for every single Monday through Friday in a year. I agree that the school system gets way too many days off. But you can't ask someone to do work when they aren't being paid. Pay the teachers for more than 195 days then you can have them train over the summer. |
You are kidding right? I teach 6th grade. Here is what an ES does during planning since you seem unaware. 1) Lesson Planning - add in two new curriculums this year! They gave to plan for EVERY Subject plus small groups and morning meeting. 2) Grading - some is automatic but not all assignments we grade are computer based. 3) Email - responding to parents, staff, sending newsletters 4)PD - FCPS sends them throughout the year. 5)Administrative Tasks - random tasks the county or school requires. Going through forms that need to be collected and organized. 6) Dealing with student needs. Sometimes we have to use our planning to deal with crying kids or a behavior incident. 7) Attend meetings - CLT, IEP, 504, other meetings. Add onto all of this that many ES teachers aren’t getting the required amount of planning time. Also going to add that my school ends at 4:05. We still have kids until 4:30-4:45 most days. So many are leaving close to 5. |
There’s a large percentage of teachers that believe out of the three levels elementary, middle, and high school - That elementary is the hardest level to be a teacher. |
First off the state has not released training yet, so that is on them, not FCPS. You can’t do a training in the summer if it is not available. Secondly, would you work if you were not being paid? Teachers are paid for 195 days. FCPS doesn’t have the money to pay teachers more for an extra few days of work. I don’t agree with the early release plan as a teacher. I do think the county could have focused solely on LA for ES this year and not required any additional PD. Then we could have used previous SD to complete with maybe a couple of ER days. But FCPS likes to pile on multiple initiatives and PD. That is the larger problem here. FCPS can’t focus on one thing at a time. |
I think when it comes to planning it is definitely harder but grading is definitely more difficult in HS. It is a reason many ES departmentalize in upper ES. Planning for 1-2 subjects vs 5-6. |
I switched to MS math after teaching upper grades in the ES. Report cards are definitely more difficult (time consuming) at the ES level. |
22:04 here. In addition to the PTA arranged sports camp, as a no cost option, the school will provide IAs, school monitors, school staff and central office personnel to oversee time for students to complete hw, STMath, Lexia, MyOn, independent reading |
Why are they staying so late? |
I’m not the PP but I am an elementary school teacher. Even though the school day ends at 4:05pm, It’s common that dismissal starts 5-10 min later. At my school, the bus riders stay in the classroom until their bus is called. It is not uncommon that the last bus is called at 4:25-4:30pm. |
Because their bus is late. We are short on drivers and we consistently have at least one or two busses who are still at school at 4:30-4:45. Some of these young kids aren’t getting home till 5 or later. We also have a couple of neighborhoods closer to other ES but they are in boundary for our school. Many boundaries make no sense in this district. |
Yeah this is absolutely a valuable and age-appropriate way for 4-7 year olds to spend hours. This is truly embarrassing. |
It's free daycare. If you don't like it then pull your kid out. |
| So the wealthier kids get taken outside to play sports with a for-profit vendor and the poor kids sit inside and stare at ST Math all afternoon. JFC. |
| We got a survey asking if we needed childcare for the first two dates. |
Literally how the world has been for thousands of years, why would these 7 afternoons be any different? |
