I am so tired of hearing teachers have so much to do now. What exactly do they do in ES? Lesson plans? Fine. Attend IEP meetings? Ok. Manage a ton of kids? Definitely. But so many resort to YouTube to teach their lessons and grading is automatic.
You are kidding right? I teach 6th grade. Here is what an ES does during planning since you seem unaware. 1) Lesson Planning - add in two new curriculums this year! They gave to plan for EVERY Subject plus small groups and morning meeting. 2) Grading - some is automatic but not all assignments we grade are computer based. 3) Email - responding to parents, staff, sending newsletters 4)PD - FCPS sends them throughout the year. 5)Administrative Tasks - random tasks the county or school requires. Going through forms that need to be collected and organized. 6) Dealing with student needs. Sometimes we have to use our planning to deal with crying kids or a behavior incident. 7) Attend meetings - CLT, IEP, 504, other meetings. Add onto all of this that many ES teachers aren’t getting the required amount of planning time. Also going to add that my school ends at 4:05. We still have kids until 4:30-4:45 most days. So many are leaving close to 5.
