It’s too late to begin to re draw boundaries and pull kids from WSHS. This has been a controversial decision dating back to Daventry development: residents moved there thinking this was solid WSHS boundary (developer thought so) and then the bait and switch.

My parent’s then-new neighborhood off of Hooes Road was built circa 1979 with WSHS pyramid schools (HVEs/Irving) but changed to Lee in 1987.

Lewis doesn’t need to close and it’s not a bad school. FCPS needs to figure out how to fix it without forcing other kids to go there to boost them up.

She did not. Only three or four members voted for grandfathering juniors. I think Moon, Dr. Anderson, Lady, and Meren voted for the amendment grandfathering high school students (can't remember if it was all high school students, or just juniors). The claim was the amendment was written too narrowly and tied the hands of the board and would not allow more generous grandfathering. In my mind, it means moving juniors is still on the table, which is shocking to me as well

Lewis is a failed HS and a lot of time, money, and resources has been poured into Lewis over the past 5 years, with no improvement. Now they want to move high SES, non-FARMS students to come in to help fix the school? Lewis is an FCPS problem, expecting good students from stable families to come in save the school is an interesting Hail Mary by Dr Reid. No way that people who paid almost a million dollars for a 50 y.o. split level in West Springfield are going to go for that nonsense.

It wouldn’t have been Lady. She was the one that made a point to publicly proclaim in the governance meeting that FCPS kids are soft and that minimal grandfathering will toughen them up.

Such incredibly awful groupthink from the school board. Led by Sandy Anderson. Did you all watch her speech from the July 18 school board meeting? She hates all of you, it’s very clear. Seething disdain.

I agree this was just poorly done. They could have easily amended Dr. Anderson’s and Meren’s amendment to say AT LEAST rising 10-12 etc. Meren and DR. Anderson put a lot of thought into the develomental needs of kids and had differentiated between the school levels (elementary, middle and high).

Moon tried to point this out by saying transportation wasn’t even guaranteed in the amendment, so if transportation was the issue, the board could easily not provide it for grandfathered students.

But , all the other SB members wanted more leeway to make more sweeping changes faster and get rid of grandfathering ASAP.

There was no other reason to vote the way they did. They covered up the truth yet again by saying they needed leeway in BOTH directions (more and less grandfathering) but in truth they just wanted leeway for LESS grandfathering.

No, she pivoted and was on of the four who supported Ricardy Anderson's failed amendment to guarantee that all high school students would be grandfathered.

Of course, there could have been some vote counting in advance, and Lady may have voted in favor of the amendment knowing it would fail, and others on the board may have had no issue with her doing so, recognizing that she's got constituents who will keep her under a microscope for the rest of her term.

No dog in this fight, but that attitude needs to go. It's absolutely not FCPS's nor the taxpayer's responsibility to remove all risk from overbidding for real estate. Do you always support government intervention, or only when the government will save your bottom line?

DP. It's absolutely not PP kid's responsibility to improve test scores for poor kids either.

West Springfield is made up of tons of military and government workers. They ARE the government and the military, but we still want what is best for our kids. Moving kids in the middle of high school isn’t okay for them. With all the mental health talk the SB does, god help the school board if a kid has a mental crisis when they switch high schoolers in the middle of their careers.

We can read studies and know that a school with an astronomical FARMS and majority minority isn’t as good as for our kids as a school with high performing minorities that is also majority minority. That is what every study says. Help the kids who need it, that is what government is for, not bringing everyone to the same level, but helping individual kids. Not grandfathering kids will cause active harm.

No one put a lot of thought into this plan. They blindly accepted the recommendation of the governance committee on the draft policy with no public discussion about the specifics of grandfathering at all and allowed the draft to become final. Then the day before the meeting people started throwing in grandfathering amendments, again with no public discussion, and another amendment was proposed the day of the meeting that was passed with no thoughtful consideration whatsoever. The entire process was an embarrassment and disservice to the families of FCPS students.

One thing that is clear is that, if they can't follow a clear process for amending a policy, it will be even worse when it comes to the process for implementing the policy.

They can try to shove all the work down to Reid and staff, but it's not like Reid and staff have distinguished themselves as paragons of competence, and the instinct on the part of School Board members to intervene, meddle, and criticize will be very strong.

FCPS had more competents 20 years ago. Now it made Kent Gardens more of a mess and the boobs can't find Bren Mar Park on a map NOR the wad of optional programs at Edisn and West Potomac that can be moved. Most iditotic was the new out of boundary Montessori mess.

No one overbid for a house in West Springfield, we bought in a stable district with great schools. Lewis has been mismanaged by years, including appointing a Principal and nominating him as Principal of the Year, for no accomplishment. Why was that? Enormous amounts of money, resources, staff, and trial programs have been poured into Lewis, with no results. Nearby Hayfield HS and Edison HS have a number of out of state and out of district students, no one is focused on that issue either. There are 4 other HS's closer to West Springfield, but somehow bussing West Springfield students through the Mixing Bowl during morning and evening rush hours and requiring parents and student drivers to move through that same traffic nightmare is going to help solve what issue? The traffic and bussing issue should have made this a nonstarter from the get go. WS students will now spend 1+hour commuting each way for Dr Reid's equity experiment.

No dog in the fight? Are you a taxpayer? Are you concerned about FCPS waste and abuse? Are you a county resident and tax payer? Which school district do you live in?

Actually I do not support government intervention. At all. The government is seldom concerned about the bottom line or doing what is best for the majority of citizens. The school district is spending millions to build the Dunn Loring ES, where it is not needed; spent millions to expand WestPo, when it was not needed.

Same for Herndon. Huge overexpansion and the year it is completed the SB is complaining that the school is undercapacity. Ridiculous.
