Interesting. For my teen boys their internet/gaming time starts at 10. |
| So many of you guys are controlling and weird (screening for depression and thyroid, really?). |
| Two weeks of extreme laziness sounds like a perfect summer break to me. |
This. eesh. |
I think parents are not at all terrified of "downtime." I think parents are terrified of the consequences of letting their children stare at their phone screens for 9+ hours a day. |
| What a bum |
In many cases, that’s a consequence of not letting kids have downtime when they are young |
No, it is not. Phones are addictive, especially to teens. (I say this as a high school teacher who has experience with hundreds of teens every year.) |
PP. Also a teacher (elementary) and I see both sides of the spectrum- kids who have constant activities and no time to play and those who start on excessive screen time very, very young and both have negative effects. Kids who don’t learn how to occupy themselves when young can’t magically do it as teens. |
+1 DD did this her first two weeks of break (after first year of college). Then she started working 30 hrs a week and got back to a regular sleep schedule. |
| Chill lady. What do you want her to be doing if no friends are here? |
| I challenge all parents of teens to pick up their kids' phones and look at their usage data over the past 2 weeks. You might find interesting tends depending on amount of "downtime" available. |
I read books all day in the summer but only because personal phones hadn't been a thing yet. |
| This is probably the only time I. Their lives they can spend two weeks doing nothing. Let them be. My 12yo sleeps in until noon but she’s a night owl by nature. My early morning bird DS wakes up at 7am for swim practice and is ready to start the day (gaming). As long as they get some outside time and exercise, who cares. |
You think it is normal to sleep past 1pm? Sorry, but that’s excessive. 99% chance of your kid is still asleep at 1 and won’t work up, it’s because they have been up all night on their phone/computer consuming hours of social media/youtube garbage content. Or gaming. If you think this is totally fine at 14, you’re a terrible parent |
