So, you think if we need more service members due to war, we can just draft them and send them off?
Do you not understand that these service members need training on their roles, the munitions they use, the technology they have and a slew of other things. They cannot walk into the nearest Army HQ and leave immediately for war.

Having a strong, ready military is the BEST weapon to PREVENT war.
Sad you don't understand this. Seems Joe doesn't either.

These are enlisted cannon fodder. Just send them to AIT and send them on their way. Easy peasy!

This is a no brainer. They cannot recruit people into these roles because the military requires fit people with no mental illnesses, no learning disabilities, no criminal records, no substantial drug use, no physical problems, etc. Then on top of that, they need some of them to be of high intelligence for roles like cyber, crypto, intelligence, etc. These types of youths are now vanishingly rare, and since our culture actually penalizes people who served as enlisted members, they have to feel like the military is truly the best option. I don't know how they can recruit people at this point.

High intelligence roles and admin roles can be outsourced to GS or contractors. No need for military enlisted people in those roles.

Nice to see a democrat supporting our troops.

Would you also say they are losers and suckers?

President Biden supports the troops. Both of his sons served

Hunter got two near impossible waivers and was discharged because he peed hot on a drug test.

If Biden supports the troops, he should not oppose giving lower enlisted enough money to pay to shelter their families adequately.

I’m just nosey but which waivers?

If someone is committing fulltime hours or more to an organization, whether the military or a company, they should be taken care of sufficiently to put a roof over their heads and food on their tables as well as their kids. In the case of the military I grew up in a military family and we had military housing and PX privileges with low cost groceries and so on which should help in many cases but not all military postings have that available, and where not, it should be made up via extra pay.

But again it's also not just about the military, companies and other employers have an obligation to take care of their full time staff as well.

"The number one priority for our military is getting that recruitment crisis under control and increasing pay is a good way to do that," said Veterans on Duty chairman Jeremy Hunt on "Fox & Friends" Thursday.

"The administration is strongly committed to taking care of our service members and their families, and appreciates the [House Armed Services Committee's] concern for the needs of the most junior enlisted members, but strongly opposes making a significant, permanent change to the basic pay schedule before the completion of the Fourteenth Quadrennial Review of Military Compensation," the White House said in a statement.

Hunt slammed this opposition, saying, "It's truly remarkable to me. … President Biden has approved over $100 billion in student loan forgiveness. But when it comes to our troops, America's most precious resource, he's complaining about an increase in military pay?"

That’s actually a great point. Millions for student loan forgiveness; Military families paying oop for their housing costs.

No wonder recruitment is in the toilet.

No, it's in the toilet b/c people like my husband, a retired serviceman, forbade his son from joining.

The truth is that we've never supported our troops - under any administration.

Using the calculator on military.com, an E3 with 3 years of service in the DC area with dependents is getting $71,328 annually, including their housing allowance.

If they live on base then the housing allowance goes away but they are essentially living for free in base housing. They (and their dependents) get practically free health/dental/vision care, spouse gets hiring priority for U.S. government jobs, and childcare is ridiculously low.

That's a pretty good deal for someone who (traditionally) is in their early 20s, married and may have a kid or two.

And often not high performers (either grade wise or with low level criminal violations).

The groceries are not low cost any longer.
The PX is more expensive than Target and Walmart.
Military kids have to pay to use the pools on post now, even if they live on post.

It’s true, the benefits have been chipped away at bit by bit. That’s why recruiting is down.

Yep. My husband is also retired military. While we haven't "forbidden" them joining, we greatly discourage it. Fortunately none of them have shown interest (youngest is 18.)

What?

What’s so hard to understand? High performers don’t enlist in the military.

If they want to serve they go the officer route. Enlistment is for losers. They would be working at Walmart or flipping burgers if they didn’t have the military.

You can’t refute anything I’ve said.

Enlisted are the bottom of the barrel and are compensated more than enough.

Suckers.

The GOP has consistently resisted military pay increases for decades and now, in an election year, they come up with a HUGE pay increase they know will be rejected. Y'all need to be a little more suspect when stuff like this comes out of the blue.

Do they deserve a pay increase? Absolutely. But 19.5% overnight? Pull my other leg.
