Merit scholarship for UMD???

For those who suggest to retake class…..
Enlighten me, it’s too late for this summer. The next year is not changing his transcript now.

All of my kid!s merit offers (not U of MD) were for each of all 4 years (assuming she kept her grades up).

Presidential scholarships, which are up to $5k in-state or $17.5k OOS, are for four years. Dean’s (for in-state only) are for one year of $1.5k or two years at $4.5k.

Saw someone claiming they got 12.5K in state this year. Not sure if they are exaggerating or amount got raised. Anyone know?

My DC is not highly motivated in improving his SAT, even though it’s the only thing he can do to move the needle. He got a B and a C taking calc BC as a junior.
I still don’t understand what GPA kid has to have to get into Engineering. Does it have to be 3.9 and above?
Just to clarify not CS.

That's a lesson on hyperacceleration for those that follow. I'm sorry the you weren't able to make the needed adjustment after first semester.

It's a shame that the school allowed that to happen, and didn't transfer your kid to Calc AB. There is no good reason to keep a kid in BC with a B grade, when AB is an option.

He had A in calc AB the previous year.

I think the hang up for your kid will be getting the low grade even after taking Calc AB. Most high stats kids that I know go from pre-calculus to Calculus BC. The overall rigor of other courses will also matter, plus ECs.

You may know a lot of kids, but in our very big HS was only one kid that did that and got C in it. (Got to Engineering UMD too).
We checked and were told not to skip Calc AB.

My kid is at PHS and most strong kids take BC Cal after pre-Call junior year. I thought it was a bit of faith for my magnet kid.

And PHS is for public or private?
It’s not the case for our school anyhow mostly because of the person who was teaching it. His mission in life was to torpedo grades and he was good at it.

12.5k over 4 year perhaps. In state max is $5k per year for 4 years.

If you are talking Poolesville HS in Montgomery County the strongest kids take Calc BC sophomore year.

That is what I thought. I sure hope this person did not read the letter wrong.

In MCPS you can always take retake a class in the summer to replace the grade. Not sure about other school systems or how this shows on transcript. Not to be a downer but I would worry about a kid getting a C in calculus handling the engineering workload at UMD.

MCPS (central or school level) doesn't offer AP classes during the summer.

Tell me you go to WJ without saying you go to WJ ... ??

We got 1.5K merit aid in-state for 1560 SAT and all As in a magnet program in MCPS. Physics.

So, nothing, basically.

Good luck!

Many strong kids don't at Blair. Doing functions track is about passion, not just strength. Lots of kids would prefer to take more time with math progression, do Calc in 11th, and focus on other stem aspects.

Can he get any money from UMD? We live in MD.

With an UW gpa of 3.86, your DS may struggle to get into engineering at UMD. It is a very competitive program. Will get no merit.

Do you actually know those who didn’t get with similar stats? Because when I am looking at the scattergram for his school he looks safe. I am aware that UMD is very competitive, but it appears that he falls within green. I am assuming that some of those kids went to the Engineering school.

DP. I do. Each year gets harder. I don't think scattergram has 24 data yet.

I am looking at it. It’s last four years.

You don't know what you don't know. Did you ask counselor? Do you know that the xs are for last 4 only? Our school has last 4 years as bar graphs, but the scattergram didn't match up, and when I emailed, I found it had 10+ year old data.
And, to reiterate, I know a kid with similar stats who did not get in.

No, it's $8000/yr tuition plus $1250/yr for books.

(Actual sticker price is $10000 + $1700 fees + $1250 estimated books = $13000. All the rest is room rent, food, and travel.)
