Have him retake calculus this summer. |
DP. I do. Each year gets harder. I don't think scattergram has 24 data yet. |
I found out that at my kid's MCPS school, some Naviance data was over 10 years old. Really not helpful! Ask counseling office. |
He had A in calc AB the previous year. |
Basically, engineering is an extremely competitive major at UMD, which is known for engineering and cs. SAT and GPA won't be the issue. It's the C in calculus BC. So realistically, engineering is not happening unless there's some super hook. And forget about merit scholarships for that major with a C in calculus. |
| But taken in junior year. |
I am looking at it. It’s last four years. |
Yes |
| If admitted to UMD but not the engineering LEP, he can transfer into engineering with a 3.0. They will also let him take all the required freshman year courses, so he won’t be behind. |
|
Surprised to hear of merit split over two years.
All of my kid!s merit offers (not U of MD) were for each of all 4 years (assuming she kept her grades up). |
Presidential scholarships, which are up to $5k in-state or $17.5k OOS, are for four years. Dean’s (for in-state only) are for one year of $1.5k or two years at $4.5k. |
I’m pretty sure that some of the green on Naviance is students who were accepted to Freshman Connection (spring start)— I don’t think Naviance differentiates? My DS with similar stats was accepted for spring. He had a C on his transcript that I think impacted his application. He had been applying for a limited major so did not end up choosing UMD since the spring start essentially ruled that out. |
+100, definitely retake Calculus Your biggest problem is not merit from UMD (although that is always nice to get) Your problem is that with that level of mastery of calculus, he has a high chance of dropping out from the program altogether. Calculus is the base, the foundation of much of the subsequent learning. If he got a mercy C for it in HS, he may not be able to keep up with subsequent coursework. |
I think the hang up for your kid will be getting the low grade even after taking Calc AB. Most high stats kids that I know go from pre-calculus to Calculus BC. The overall rigor of other courses will also matter, plus ECs. |
You may know a lot of kids, but in our very big HS was only one kid that did that and got C in it. (Got to Engineering UMD too). We checked and were told not to skip Calc AB. |
