Maybe if people who wanted us to take them seriously about this had previously behaved in professional, ethical ways, more people would have taken them seriously. But it was yahoos like Jim Jordan and Tom Cotton saying it and they are like the boy who cried wolf. But also… what does it matter? Do you think China is going to forgive all our loans because they accidentally harmed us? |
| Some of us were pretty sure on day one that it was a lab leak. It was very instructive to see all the verbal gymnastics and outright lies from formerly respectable institutions trying to convince us otherwise. |
Institutions make decisions based on evidence, not their gut. You had zero evidence to think it was from a lab “on day one.” |
It came from Wuhan. Home of…well we all know what is there. |
Let me see your business card. |

Can someone explain to me why it mattered AT THE TIME?
How would knowing how the virus appeared help Americans in spring of 2020? How was that a good use of time and resources? |
It wouldn’t have mattered and there was no way to know that soon. Republicans don’t like to wait for investigations though. They like to hurry up and be outraged because Tom Cotton said so. |
| Don't get me started on the shit US has done wrong, badly and should be ashamed for. Shit happens. I think the more important value here is lessons learned. I don't think the YS handled the epidemic well in many ways. Maybe we start there and fix our own problems first before screaming bloody murder about something that's already done and was never within our control. |

| Shocking, Fauci funneled money to an incompetent lab, to conduct gain of function research, so he could test out his pet theory that vaccines are the most important thing in medicine. What could possibly have gone wrong. Lab failed, Fauci failed. |
| So if it was leaked from a lab, what’s the world going to do? China is the embodiment of unethical behavior and has consistently shown it has very little value for human life. Do you want a war? You know kill more people for killing people? Additionally, if you thought the covid measures were drastic here; china’s were draconian. They had insane lockdowns. |
There were a bunch of people devoted to pushing a narrative that nothing was Trump’s fault, while at the time Trump’s main priority was to stop testing for Covid so he could say that it was going away on its own and he didn’t need to do anything about it. |
Operation ward speed got the virus out to Americans on a timetable liberals had insisted was unrealistic. Your memory seems very hazy! |
We wouldn’t have wasted precious public health resources trying to find an animal reservoir that didn’t exist, we would have substantial international pressure against China who at the time was blocking WHO and other independent investigators from accessing the lab, and more importantly we wouldn’t have had so much damage in trust for the public health and government institutions who were shutting down debate about this despite the obvious signs. People aren’t stupid and suspected a lab leak from the beginning but the way the health experts were reflexively saying it was a conspiracy theory was extremely damaging to the public trust. Yes, it matters. Even now. |
