Dad here with some gift ideas for Father's Day

Anonymous
Another dad here with some comments/suggestions to add to the OP's list (which was solid)

Anonymous wrote:Since invariably we get the "what should I get DH/Dad/Kids' Dad for Father's Day" around here, I thought I'd offer a list of things *I* would actually like to receive.

Please note: This list is offered in good faith and the assumption of a happily functioning family, including an engaged father and husband who wasn't neglectful of his own wife/mother/mother of his children a month ago. If he forgot, or whatever, I'm genuinely sorry for you but please don't derail my thread by harping on that. I'm offering this in genuine good faith.

I'm doing things across price points, in case that's helpful. Some of these things are probably out of budget for some people, and that's OK. It's just a list of things I would genuinely like. (And keep in mind, these are just "my" things -- other guys obviously have different interests -- I'm just hoping it gives a flavor of the TYPE of thing we like. Adapt to the men in your lives as you see fit).

High dollar stuff

-- A really nice straw Panama hat. Price: $50 to 75 for like a Bruno Capelli to $1,000 for a genuine Montecristi. But a good price point is the $180 or so for a hemp fedora from Stetson or Borsalino. Good online sources for hats include Village Hat Shop, Holland Hats in Connecticut, Hats in the Belfry, Dapperfam. Bonus if you pair it with a nice, authentic Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses with an attitude. You could also think ahead to Fall and go the felt hat route, but the good ones cost between $200-600 and up depending on whether it's rabbit, hare, or beaver. You can get wool for around $100. Caps are good too -- and are less expensive. Get him to trade baseball caps for a good newsboy. Depends on whether he's a cap or wide brim guy (or could be)... I just recommend the straw since he can wear it right away.

-- High-qualify bourbon, ideally something you have to get at the lottery or allocated drops at the ABC stores in VA. Pappy Van Winkle, etc. -- couple of hundred bucks if you can find it. Bonus: A monogrammed decanter and matching glasses. Yes! Or arrange a bourbon tasting; bonus points if you can get some of his friends to go.

-- Tickets to a sports event or concert. For me that would be like a weekend series for baseball, including overnight (i.e. a Saturday night game/hotel/Sunday afternoon game). Your guy might be into other types of sports. Splurge for decent seats. Yes. Or, if you know his favorite comedians, see if they're coming to the area and get tickets.

-- Subscription to Stately, if he likes clothes (but only for a couple of months -- it'll add up.) I think many of us aren't that into new clothes all the time, but YMMV

Medium dollar stuff

-- High quality multitool like a Leatherman. Yeah. I wish I'd thought to ask for this. I lost mine years ago and still haven't replaced it.

-- High quality rain jacket. Check out the Danish maker called Rains. https://www.us.rains.com/collections/waterproof-rain-jackets?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0_WyBhDMARIsAL1Vz8tMy7vZ_GR3pMezj6l0OOE4DnPrb9WrUOtCEueuplbDIDu6T8TyISsaAlADEALw_wcB Sure, if there's a need for one.

-- Subscription to Bespoke Post. I've been very surprised by what I've gotten from them, including the aforementioned rain jacket.

-- Supplies for grill (not tools so much as something to cook beer can chicken with ... or other accessories he might normally buy for himself). Consider various seasonings, marinades, etc. also. Or a gift card to a butcher.

-- Something like throwing knives and a target. This would probably get used once by me, but if he has a hobby, you can always find a new gadget/accessory. For me, things for cycling are always appreciated.

Low dollar stuff I'd package this stuff into a basket, but it's come good ideas. Maybe add some nice socks or underwear

-- Hot sauces, a variety. Best if you actually select several yourself rather than order prepackaged collection.

-- Collection of teas or coffees.

-- Jelly Beans or a favorite candy from youth. Jelly Belly is the best brand, IMO.

-- Obviously, anything handmade by kiddos

Hope this helps. If I think of other things, I'll add to the list.

Other ideas:

-- Arrange a golf outing with friend(s)
-- Replace a pair of shoes (running, sneakers, dress) that are overdue
-- Record player and some vinyl records (one of my favorite gifts from years pass)
-- Car detailed

Anonymous wrote:Thanks OP! I enjoy reading lists like this and often find them helpful. My DH would love a few of your items.

Some more ideas for others, inspired by my DH:
- Nice cigars and a cigar humidor
- Professional framing of special items (e.g., jerseys) if DH has an office or man cave
- Heated vest (obviously better for colder months)

Good idea. But don’t buy something if husband/dad still has his own high school jersey around somewhere. Get that framed instead. If I got something like that for Father’s Day, my mind would be blown.

Yes! I am the one that wrote that post and that is how I intended it — framing of items you already have that DH would appreciate hanging. In our case, I had DH’s college football jerseys framed and hung in our rec room/basement and he loved it. He also has signed band posters he’d appreciate having up but we haven’t gotten around to.

+100!

It's amazing how every list for father's day gifts are the same--booze, BBQing gear, hot sauce. As if every man is a stereotypical sitcom dad. I would give anything for a list had some imagination/creativity in it.

Just wondering if the other fathers in my life would like anything from your list

Anonymous wrote:Thank you for posting - This is so interesting! My DH would have a totally different list - he doesn’t drink, eat spicy foods, like sports, & would feel like a kid unwrapping a 6 pack of underwear on Christmas morning if I got him clothes/a hat/a raincoat.

He likes anything “smart” - a smart dog leash, smart garden hose, smart grill brush - who cares, but if it has a little microchip in it, he will happily spend the morning setting up his new toy.

& he’s a Star Wars nerd, so the kids will get him something related to that - a funko pop, mug, etc. that’s what he’ll happily share on his zoom call on Monday with his team.

Favorite food that day is a definite - I think that is the universal common denominator!
.

What, pray tell, is a smart dog leash? Does it bag the kaka for you?

It’s for dogs who read Schopenhauer in their spare time. Like Brian on Family Guy.

This post just shows how silly the posts asking for gift ideas are.

Bc while I appreciate that OP put thought into this, I (a 44 year old father of 2 kids aged 12 and 15) would not want anything in that post.

A panama straw hat?!? GTFO. a Newsboy hat?!? even freaking worse. nobody has every looked good in one of those. Jesus H.

All of these ideas may be good for OP, but christ almighty, these ideas are VERY specific just to OP.

Please ladies, do not just assume these are good ideas.

Dude, throwing stars and a straw hat?

Forget about getting your man card taken away, you never had it in the first place.

For me, I could use a new speed rope for working out. and I like the Rocks' brand of weight lifting clothes from UA. So either of those would be great.

Someone else recommended some good vinyl. I collect records so that would be appreciated. Or some old band t-shirts would be good too. Or vintage band/concert posters for either the basement or the garage gym. But truly vintage ones would be awesome; not reprints.

Having my car detailed would probably be the one I would be most excited about.

Got it. Older rich guy gift list. Can someone do a 30's dad of young kids HHI 125k?

NP. Stop dumping on the list. They were ideas! You are not required to buy these. Add a few of your own too.

Person who mentioned cycling things? Tell me more. My DH also likes fishing, tools, and nonfiction. Who else has ideas!

I ended up with a blanket that says, "Even though the world thinks you are just a mom, you are the world to me" from my daughter. I'm also on a hunt for something comparable for DH too We love trolling each other via our kids.
