Tufts - questions (ranking, low acceptance rate, comparable schools - why?)

(admissions rate is not a factor in rank)

I think my question was understood but thanks!

Definitely visit. We visited Tufts, BC, Northeastern and BU and my kid didn’t like the feeling of Tufts at all. They and their sibling both found the surrounding neighborhood bland and boring, too.

- Usually lumped together with Wash U, Vanderbilt, Emery, Rice, etc.?

Tufts is fine though is NOT lumped with those. In our public magnet/gov school, Tufts takes kids that UVA waitlists or rejects in-state. UVA in state takes from the top 30-40%. The other schools you list, Vandy/Emory/WashU all admit from the top 1/4 or higher(higher gpa for RD opposed to ED)

Tufts would have been a near peer of WashU, Vandy, Emory 10-15 years ago. Not today.

Prestige factor is negligible for Schools like Emory and even WashU compared to he Boston schools, Tufts BC BU NU.

One thing I noticed on our tour was how rundown many of the buildings and campus appeared compared to other Boston schools, especially BC. BC is also far more accessible to T to get into town and more social (but admittedly, not everyone is a social butterfly).

OP - why does this matter? Visit and if DC likes it, apply. If not, don't.

Boston sucks as a college town

The only reason Boston has this reputation is because of the number of schools that started up in Boston and and continue to operate

But as a college town it has huge drawbacks:

- not fun
- bad weather during school year
- earth shatteringly expensive (rent, living expenses etc)
- poor public transportation
- no happy hour
- not social

The only positive thing about Boston is there is a large number of college students in the area and it is safe

But on almost every other metric, it is not college student friendly or a “great college town”

Just because you were a stick in the mud during your time in Boston doesn’t meant that thousands of others students don’t have fun.

My friends and I had a blast.

Different at our private, UVA is a much easier admit than Tufts and we are oos for UVA. Emory is the easiest admit of the three and the kids that go there are not in top twenty percent of class (ED1 applicants). Tufts and Wash U admits are in T20 percent of class.

The school on this list that doesn’t belong is Vandy. The other three are peer schools.

Tufts is harder to get in than UVA.
If you are full pay and can't pay for Tufts, then they choose UVA instate.

Tufts has finance minor. We're scheduled for tour this summer with business major minded son, who also wants to study history and foreign language and do study abroad.

Go with Boston College.

At our public school, Tufts, Wash U, and Emory are comparable…high stats kids have a reasonable shot ED; very, very difficult RD. UVA and BC are both marginally easier; Vandy is a bit harder (this was not true even 2-3 years ago).

+1. For business/finance, this isn't a close call.
