BMI is a terrible metric. A muscly 27 is leagues away from a flabby 27? |
Yes this board is always the outlier. Or just plain liar |
as you age, a BMI of 27 is much healthier than a BMI of 20. |
Sure. And 1/1000 women over the age of 35 fall into that category. The rest are fat and have poor cardiovascular health. |
It is a population metric which means it works reasonably well as a guide for the majority of the population. Individually, it can be discussed with a health care provider to see what it means for them. |
In your dreams. |
Yes all on dcum are Michal Phelps, cross fir pros and Arnold’s! So much muscle, so little brain. |
BMI is a very poor measurement of health and weight. It can give you a rough outline for some people, but isn't accurate for a lot of people - especially fit and active people.
Technically I'm slightly overweight (BMI is like 25.4) but I'm very active and lift weights. I have large dense breasts, and have some lose skin from losing a chunk of weight. My doctor isn't remotely concerned about my weight - my orthopedist even called me "thin!" |
The only way this discussion makes any sense is to be clear on the purpose of the metric.
If it is to reflect today's cultural beauty standards, that gets you to one outcome. If it is to reflect overall health or longevity, that gets you to another outcome. The two are not the same. |
Re-read what you wrote. BMI is a “very poor measure” because of some narrow exceptions that are not at all representative of the actual population realities. This is like people that attack standardized testing because they always managed a shitty score. It’s the same thing. |
This is basically what the article is saying. As people age and muscle mass declines, that BMI is even less useful because it could be masking a high % of fat. BMI is useful as a data point but other data points are needed. (Body scans, weight measurements, etc). |
Yes.
In Japan, a country with an obesity rate below 5%, they consider a BMI of 25 and over to be obese. Just like how we have vanity sizing in the West, we have vanity BMI. You're definitely overweight if you're 25 BMI unless you are quite stocky with tons of muscle (most people aren't and shouldn't kid themselves). Americans are super fat. |
Yeah, that's because size 8 for in American would probably be like a size 14 abroad in Europe or Asia. Size 8 is probably undoubtedly a large to extra large if you were to go shopping in say Asia. I wouldn't trust US sizing at all. |
Untrue. About 25% who are “fat” or 27 bmi have cardiovascular issues. |
This chick has an eating disorder and is all over this page. When I was American size 8 my doctor asked me to gain 5 lbs. |
