Don’t over think it OP. It’s 3.5 months. Your kid will get some GE credits done. The quality of the courses will be between meh and kind good. They won’t have access to LSE or Bocconi level for example. It’s fine. Enjoy the three months, travel a lot, then enroll in Spring and pick things up from there. It’s all good. Pick the location your kid hasn’t been to/has easiest access to weekend travels. There’s a LOT of weekend travel. So get okay with your kid hopping around Europe (if they haven’t done that before). Also, at 18, they are drinking age in Europe. So, be okay with that too. Mostly it’s an adjustment for You. The kid will bond with some new friends and will be fine assimilating to campus in the spring.

Unless they're stuck going to Oakland.

My kid would never pick Oakland, never.

My friend's kid had no choice. She was told Oakland or nothing.

There’s nothing wrong with Oakland. What are people’s problems?

Oakland CA is not an exciting place. It's a dangerous place. It is not Silicon Valley. It's the Mills college campus that was going under and NEU acquired it. After that they need to use it to make money. So they came up with Global Scholars and sending kids there for the first year. They even tried to send kids there for all 4 years, but when kids/parents complained they changed the acceptance rules and allowed them to transfer to Boston after 1 year. Basically NEU quickly realized that not many want to spend 4 years in Oakland so if they want to fill the campus they need to do it thru other means.

However, if you desire to spend your 4 years of college in Oakland, then feel free to apply, get accepted and attend.

Isn't UCBerkeley in Oakland?

No it's in Berkeley. Very different location, despite being nearby.

It is nearby, you are right! I did not realize how close they are!

CIEE runs very good programs. My DCs did a summer program and a study abroad program. Can't comment about NU specifically.

NEU's entire campus is unto itself, with its own security, so be apprised before you post.

My friend's dd was accepted Oakland/London then Boston. She got online the summer before school looking for a spot in a Boston dorm. Got it, and was able to do 1st semester at Boston and is now in London. She avoided Oakland.

That's not how the program works. You take the NUIn (or Oakland) admit or you don't martriculate. Stop spreading lies.

Anonymous wrote:(Please, no Northeastern bashing needed. I've read it all. NEU is DC's first choice for several reasons.)

DC applied ED I to NEU Boston social sciences school and was admitted non-binding to N.U.in (also spelled NU.in).

Anyone have firsthand experience with the program? Ideally for non-STEM student and/or Berlin, Prague, Lisbon sites. But any feedback (not speculation or hearsay) is welcome.

The locations won't be confirmed until late February. All we've heard is "get your deposit in asap" and "read last year's webpage in the interim."

We've searched google, reddit, college confidential, quora, etc. Not much other than Athens is a party spot, Paris and Rome fill up fast, most are rich business students or self-pay kids with lower stats than Boston admitees, and housing back in Boston is chaos.

Do these comments sound accurate?
Is the quality of courses comparable to Boston?
What kind of academic supports do they offer?
Is program operator CIEE (not NEU) organized and responsive?
How big are classes? Any by Zoom?
What were positives?
What were negatives?

We really appreciate any insights. It's so different from other offers DC has that it's hard to compare. Apparently we only have a few weeks to decide when locations come out?

Thanks DCUMers

For NU's programs, you will be dealing with NU, not CIEE, so the second half of your question is irrelevant, OP. There are no classes online, to my knowledge.

There is nothing dangerous about the Mills College campus. It is far removed from the "bad" part of Oakland. Northeastern was in a bidding war with UC Berkeley over who would take control. Northeastern promised to keep Mills College students and retain a women's leadership department. Berkeley just wanted the campus for dorms.

Northeastern won.

My son did his first year at Oakland, and it was fine. The campus is nice and safe. It was the first year of NEU Mills, so I do think they were kind of making it up as they went. The classes were small, and he developed a group of good friends.

I believe they changed it and only have to go one semester in Oakland. One of my D23’s classmates went and is headed to Boston for second semester. We are from the Bay Area so it was an unappealing option at my D’s SF high school because it was just like being home. The admitted everyone who applied to NEU into that program and it was several kids, some who allegedly had not very high GPAs but were full pay.

I had no idea! Great news! Fascinating!

OP, to answer your question, I know a girl who did a semester in Berlin last year and loved it. She liked the Boston campus too but ended up transferring to a school she had previous been rejected at because it has a program that she is very interested in that NEU does not have.
